I think Clockers may be Spike's best but I agree Bamboozled may probably be his smartest. When I went to B&N the other day I picked up A Face In The Crowd after hearing Spike talk about how it was a huge influence on Bamboozled recently on a Zoom Q&A between him and Barry Jenkins, Spike also said Budd Schulberg was a huge mentor of his.

Criterion likely felt that they would not be able to bring much more to another release of The Passenger that the region-free, extras-heavy edition from Indicator did not already provide. Not that it hasn't happened before, but for many films, there is only so much audience out there.

I'll take more Antonioni that hasn't been released on Blu please. More of his 50s work, Zabriskie Point, The Mystery of Oberwald (heck I'd take a DVD of this one since it was SOV), and Beyond the Clouds (which would have additional Criterion cred as its co-directed by Wim Wenders).

Though if someone wants to do a fresh scan of The Passenger I'll be all for it.

I'd be interested in more Antonioni, and specifically in a release of Chung Kuo - Cina!

Yeah, Spike Lee worked with Budd Schulberg for years on a script called Save Me, Joe Louis, but fell through because they couldn't get the budget they needed. With Lee's recent successes, I hope that they can finally make it happen.

I don’t think Criterion would care too much about editions from other regions, but maybe. Also, it may be region free (I have a region free player anyways) but it’s one of the few titles that amazon won’t ship to my region in the US. I don’t think it’s covid related, as I just got a shipment from amazon UK of region B Blu-ray’s last week, it’s just random titles they won’t deliver. I remember I couldn’t order This is England from amazon either

Powerhouse still ships to America and this is part of a 3 for 30 pound sale.

Thanks for the heads up! I only have Scum. Do you recommend any more that aren’t available here?

I know Zabriskie Point is not considered one of Antonioni’s best, or a great film for that matter, but I like it a lot. Its meandering (and admittedly vapid) nature may be the line in the sand for some, but that’s what interests me. An incredibly eclectic and unique snapshot of late 60s California by an outsider looking in, for lack of a better term.

I’m not sure. I just started collecting them. But they have sales a lot so if you don’t find something now you can pick it up later.

I don’t think they care about other labels releasing the same titles as them overseas. Then they wouldn’t release Elephant Man after it just had a stellar UHD release in the UK.

I agree with this. The last few minutes is one of my favorite endings ever.

Uh huh, that’s why I also noted that they’d done it before. I’m not saying it’s a definitive answer, but it’s fair to consider that the potential market as they see it could have something to do with it.

Just turned on THE LONG VOYAGE HOME off WatchTCM and was surprised to see the Criterion and Janus logos before the film.

Hey I didn’t know where else to post this but thought this thread might help. I bought Barry Lyndon from last years B&N Criterion sale and I finally sat down to watch it last night but the blu Ray player said it couldn’t play the disc. Looking at the discs they almost seem to look like blank discs. Does anyone know who I should contact about this?

"To report a technical problem with your DVD or Blu-ray disc...please e-mail:"

mulvaney@criterion.com (That's Jon Mulvaney).

They are usually very helpful, but I'd probably try it in another player before doing so to be sure it's a disc issue and not a player issue.

Yeah I guess it may not have a look. Just seemed different to other discs I was comparing it to.

Thank you. I’ll try this and if it doesn’t work I’ll send out an email.

There's an OPPO player we have at work where I do screenings that for some reason has real trouble with Criterion-coded discs. It barely opens them, and if it does, it takes a real moment to move from the small 'C' to the menu... Sometimes certain players just don't like certain discs...
