Default People who have paid $150 for Out-of-Warranty service

Ok so my 60GB PS3 broke today, and I'm debating whether or not to get it fixed ($150) or buy a new one ($400).

This is the second time my PS3 broke, first time it was still in warranty so I didn't mind. But now that I have to pay, I'm curious if anyone knows about how reliable the consoles Sony sends out are. If I pay the $150, is my system going to just break again in a few months?

Also, do I get any type of warranty that comes with the system Sony sends me?

Also, like a big dummy, I haven't backed up my system for a long time...probably over a year, is there any way to get that data off the current HDD? My PS3 won't turn on at all so I can't do it that way.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks, this is a tough decision. I think I'll likely end up chancing Sony's repair service. Maybe they'll give me a brand new one (it happens!) ...

theyre all refurbs. what they do is change the top, whatever its called the sliding plastic curvy thing with the ps logo on it which is real easy to do. mine looked brand new but i looked very closely and noticed some things that told me it wasnt. if it fails on me again, im thinking i may not get it fixed or sell it if i do. which is not making me very happy but heres hoping for the best

I got my original one back last time, or at least I got the same serial number and case...insides may have been different, but apparently you can get brand new ones though from them sometimes, I read it off the playstation website (how true it is I have no idea).

If my refurb breaks I'm gonna be very mad. My system is just shy of 2 years old and it's already broken twice (completely different problems).

you got lucky. they wouldnt change the serial number. they shipped mine out the same day they received my broken one.

I had one break and that was my launch day 60 gig. I happened to have two 60 gigs, one I purchased a year later and the warranty was still valid. I just switched up the receipts and voila.....new or refurbed unit no cash needed. sometimes it pays to be a little creative with photo shop.

Ya I did...or maybe I got unlucky. This system seems to be jinxed haha.

I think it also depends on the region you live in too. I'm in Canada so their policy is slightly different then in the US. That's what the rep said to me last time. In the US you can request to keep your original system (assuming the issue is actually fixable) or a refurb, in Canada you can't choose. You get what they give you.

usually its worded where they decide what to do, either fix it and give it back or give a refurb. on the phone when i called in, they stated they reserved the right to choose. would have liked my own back, 160gig drive full of stuff - GONE. had a back up on the pc that was lost from a pc crash.

I can't backup my saves to my PC now right? There's no way without using the PS3 the hard drive came from right? Ugh I wish I had ran a back-up recently haha.

my pc didnt even see the hard drive from the ps3. you have to use an external drive to do a back up then take the external drive and copy the files over to your pc for storage. a lot of good it did me. if your ps3 doenst turn on, then you cant back up

Yep I'm screwed. Oh well whatever. My last chance is if I get my system back again, which I kinda hope I don't seeing as how it keeps breaking.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Mine gets used daily for at least 5 hours (I have 3 roommates). I've had my out-of-warranty repaired unit back for over 6 months with no problems to date. Next time it dies, I will definitely be being buying a new unit though.

Its getting late, if you want to attempt to fix whatever the issue it may be just send me a PM and I'll answer it tomorrow. Its getting late and I really need to head to bed.

Sorry I took off. Actually I had no idea what I had was the yellow light of death.
That name seems kind of odd seeing as how the yellow light only flashes for maybe a half second...should be called the flashing red light of death!

Anyways, thanks for showing me these videos guys I'm going to give this a try for sure!

If I do take my PS3 apart, will they still do an out-of-warranty replacement if it doesn't work out or am I S.O.L?

Well if it's already out of warranty they shouldn't care, but be careful with your tinkering so it looks like you didn't dismantle it just in case.

Also, my PS3 is currently dead for the second time with an apparent overheating problem (BD drive failed first time), and both times it happened out of warranty. If my taxes aren't nice to me this year, then it will be a long while before I feel OK paying another $150+tax to get it fixed
