Really?

I didn't realize Mulan was so highly regarded, especially compared Dumbo. As someone who is familiar with, but not big on Disney animation, except for maybe the original Jungle Book, I always thought Dumbo was considered one of the big ones like Pinocchio and Snow White, while Mulan was one of the lesser regarded films. Again, I like Mulan. As a fan of anime, it appealed to me the most and think it's one of Disney's best, but does everyone feel that way?

Maybe I'm just considering how movies like 47 Ronin and The Great Wall did in the states, and think Mulan, despite having the Disney name on it, may fall in with them.

No one in the states were familiar with those stories. 47 Ronin was an intriguing idea, no one really cared, even with Keanu.

Everyone knew The Great Wall was a troubled and blatant cash grab by Legendary. They had recently been released from their WB distribution deal (2013) and signed with Universal, China based Wanda had bought the company (2016), and tried to make a movie appealing to China, wrapped around an American production. No territory bit on that title...

As of 2017, almost everyone involved with original studio was gone. The original founder Thomas Tull basically got run because he tried to take credit for the success of Jurassic World and Straight Outta Compton in the summer of 2015, which pissed off Universal (and likely Spielberg). Shortly there after, the head Chinese investors had been run out of the company. (China actually banned Chinese banks from making loans to Wanda's foreign investment group.)

How the studio still exists is a bit of a mystery to me, Dune and Godzilla vs Kong should finish them off... Unless Netflix dumps some stupid money on them for a film to be produced.

Mulan was one of the modest successes for Disney from the late 90's, and kept growing in popularity over the years, not a classic, but very popular.

My friend who owns a small theater and a drive-in says Disney has told them they are sticking with the 8/28 release date in order to meet the theatrical distribution obligation for the film. So, they're essentially cutting their losses on the film and hoping to make some money with the post-theatrical digital and video releases.

My friend will be playing both Bill & Ted and New Mutants at his drive-in in the Houston area that weekend if anyone is close enough to go. https://www.showboathouston.com/

Makes sense. No point in delaying it even further. Just put the thing out there in any theater that's open then quickly move to VOD/Blu-ray.

Yeah, had a strong feeling Disney was just going to say f**k it and just release it on the 28th where available.

My local theater is open but they've been playing old stuff, like Harry Potter, maybe one MCU film, one LOTR film Extended, just a Hodge podge of stuff the city(aka us on Social media) had requested. They have some precautions put in place following stores and whatnot. So it should be fine and they've recently refurnished the auditoriums so I might go.

This wouldn't have made money whenever it released, better to get done with it and then move to VOD.

I think it would've been a sleeper hit in normal circumstances. The budget is reportedly $50 million, it's a horror and comic book film (two of the most popular genres), and it's PG-13. Even if it just made $150 million, it would've been a hit, especially if the reviews are good.

It was tracking really low.

Opening Weekend Range: $15 – 25 million

We’re currently gauging interest levels somewhat lower than 2015’s Fantastic Four reboot and last year’s Dark Phoenix.

Plus: the COVID destroyed theatres worldwide. I think all current movies and all 2020's movies are going to seriously underperform.

Did you have to consult your crystal ball on that prediction?

I'm the first one to want the "old world" back. But that's not gonna happen soon, I'm sorry.

Someone still fools himself/herself and thinks the opposite.

"The New Mutants" is gonna FLOP/underperform like every other movie. Every other.
