I'd never really considered myself a fan of westerns in the past. I'd seen a few in passing over the years that I liked well enough (Tombstone and The Quick and the Dead) but I'd never been particularly interested in the genre at all.
Roughly a year ago, however, I was gifted a beautiful copy of the book True Grit by Charles Portis and enjoyed it immensely. It made me think "are there westerns I could enjoy as much as this book?" and my journey began ![]() Listed below are the films I've watched so far as I've explored the genre. I'm sure there are many essential films I'm missing, however, and would love your thoughts and recommendations. Thanks! High Plains Drifter No Country for Old Men The Revenant 3:10 to Yuma (2007) Unforgiven A Fistful of Dollars Hang em’ High The Proposition The Magnificent Seven (1960) The Magnificent Seven (2016) The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford For a Few Dollars More The Good The Bad and The Ugly Slow West Pale Rider The Homesman True Grit (2010) Once Upon a Time in the West The Hateful Eight The Wild Bunch Django Unchained Two Mules for Sister Sara |

You got good ones in there no doubt. Add Rio Bravo, Big Jake, the old 3:10 to Yuma, Stagecoach, Shane, and I have to suggest the series Deadwood and Lonesome Dove. I have a signed, first edition True Grit by the way. The author recently passed away early this year.

Thank you so much for these recommendations. I had not heard of this Sabata trilogy. The more I read about it, the more interested I become. Lee Van Cleef and Yul Brynner? A banjo that doubles as a weapon? Yes, I will definitely be watching these ![]() |

Of those I’ve seen, I would recommend the following westerns which are not already in your list (and I’m likely forgetting some). While I recommend all of these as I think they are all good movies, I’ve put in Italics those which I found exceptionally good.
Spaghetti Westerns: Sergio Leone: A Fistful of Dynamite (or: “Duck, you sucker”). Not as good as his other movies, IMHO, but still well worth a watch. My Name is Nobody (actually only a very small part of this movie was directed by Sergio Leone, but if you love Leone’s movies, I definitely recommend this - very fun movie). Sergio Corbucci: The Great Silence American Westerns: John Ford: Stagecoach My Darling Clementine Three Godfathers Fort Apache She Wore a Yellow Ribbon Rio Grande The Searchers The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Budd Boetticher: 7 Men From Now The Tall T Ride Lonesome Decision at Sundown Buchanan Rides Alone Comanche Station Anthony Mann: Winchester ‘73 Bend of the River The Far Country The Naked Spur The Man from Laramie Man of the West Howard Hawks: Red River Rio Bravo El Dorado Rio Lobo Henry Hathaway: Rawhide Garden of Evil From Hell to Texas True Grit Sam Peckinpah: Major Dundee Ride the High Country The Ballad of Cable Hogue Delmer Daves: Broken Arrow 3:10 to Yuma (the original) The Last Wagon Henry King: The Gunfighter Raoul Walsh: They Died With Their Boots On The Tall Men John Sturges: Last Train from Gun Hill Gunfight at the O.K. Corral Edward Dmytryk: Broken Lance Warlock William A. Wellman: Westward the Women Yellow Sky Kevin Costner: Dances With Wolves Open Range William Wyler: The Big Country George Stevens: Shane Fred Zinneman: High Noon Michael Curtiz: Dodge City Nicholas Ray: Johnny Guitar Cecil B. DeMille: Union Pacific Robert Altman: McCabe & Mrs. Miller George Roy Hill: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Arthur Penn: Little Big Man Clint Eastwood: The Outlaw Josey Wales Lawrence Kasdan: Silverado So you’ve got your work cut out for you ![]() Last edited by Jerry2345; 08-14-2020 at 12:55 PM. Plenty of great recommendations thus far from fellow members AreaFive, but I'll add Sam Peckinpah's terrific final western PAT GARRETT & BILLY THE KID - unfortunately, not on Blu yet - to the mix...and for a "younger" take on the same story you may want to check out YOUNG GUNS II, the (superior) sequel to YOUNG GUNS.

I highly recommend :
1) The Professionals - directed by the great Richard Brooks, starring Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, Woody Strode, Jack Palance, the beautiful Claudia Cardinale and Ralph Bellamy. a mission western. a classic, period. 2) The Bravados - Gregory Peck, another classic. 3) Red Sun- Charles Bronson, Toshiro Mifune, excellent film. |
