When Play Misty For Me was announced back in May, it was said to be getting a 4K master:

Just read over at Tim Lucas’s blog from August 5th that he spent a month working on an epic commentary track that may never see the light of day. He doesn’t say for who but he mentions it right after saying he recorded tracks for some Kino titles. He describes the situation as similar to what happened with Lost Highway. I wonder what the title could be?

If they do release it and use Arrow's transfer I hope they fix the subtitle problem. The opening scene (in Spanish) is supposed to have English subtitles, but Arrow's release only gives you the option for subs for the ENTIRE film or none at all.

I don't understand why Arrow felt the need to translate most of the Spanish dialogue when theatrically only the beginning El Jefe scene would of had subtitles (which is reflective in the old HD master with the burnt-in subs). After the El Jefe scene I just switch them off.

Saint Joan is a Otto Preminger production that UA only distributed and let it's rights lapse after the theatrical release. Turner acquired the Otto Preminger films that were in public domain (Man With the Golden Arm) as well as ones the distributors didn't bother to renew and let their rights lapse on in the 90s. Those ended up with Warner as part of their Turner purchase, but only in the US. Overseas, Golden Arm is still PD and the others Otto Preminger productions that Warner control in the US are scattered between original distributors Columbia, MGM/UA, and Lionsgate (who released some of them on video in the UK through Vestron).
Speaking of Otto Preminger, Porgy and Bess 1959 is a Otto Preminger title that hasn't seen the light of day since it's theatrical run. It was a co-production with Samuel Goldwyn Sir with Columbia distributing, so that would put ownership with Warner since they also control US rights to the Samuel Goldwyn Sir titles held by the Samuel Goldwyn Family Trust. |

I believe Porgy and Bess is actually owned by the Gershwin estate who dislikes the film and has successfully buried it for decades. |

The Soldier Blue commentary was worth the purchase. I hope SC puts out a new master of this important film sooner or later, my tolerance for the EE on this one is about spent (It must've been great for DVD in 06, I was happy to have it in HD when I imported the DE SC disc in 14, every year since it is more and more an eyesore, to my eyes this looks identical to the DE... sadly).

KL Insider
Would you happen to know, or can you say anything about, whether the Souleymane Cissé film Yeelen will receive a BD upgrade by Kino at some point? I realize this is sort of a random question — especially given that it's an older release and not part of the KLSC line — but I've been wanting to grab it for a while, and I would definitely wait for a BD upgrade. Definitely the kind of film that would benefit from a solid HD transfer. Last edited by sabdo; 08-21-2020 at 04:12 PM. |
