Default Question from a 42" to a 46"

I just ordered the Panasonic Viera TH-46PZ85U a couple of days ago and it should be arriving either later this week or early next. I'm really excited because it is my first Pani, I upgraded from a 42" Philips Plasma. I was wondering if going from a 42" to a 46" would be substantial enough as far as screen size. I know this sounds like a stupid question-LOL. 4 inches never sounds like much, and I am having a hard time picturing it. Will I truly notice the difference in size? I only sit about 7 Feet away from the TV.

Absolutely. You are actually getting much more viewing area than 4 inches too.

These are slightly off as I am using the dimensions of the set with bezel and not actual viewing area, but you get the idea:

(H x W)
42" G10: 26.1" x 40.6" = 1059.66 square inches
46" G10: 28.5" x 44.6" = 1271.10 square inches

In this example the 46" set is 211.44 sq. inches bigger than the 42".

Having said all that, I bought a 42" on Saturday.

I'm upgrading from a 26" though.

Awesome thanks! Oh man, I can't imagine what it is like going from a 26" to a 42" (a little over a year ago) I had originally went from a 32" to a 42" and WOW! I'm sure you are going to be blown away!

BrahmaBull said it best when he gave you the square inches increase. It'll be a nice difference for sure. Good luck!

the biggest difference will come from black levels and contrast.

...nice choice with the panny.

In the past year I've gone:

20" (4:3) to 32" LCD (bedroom)
27" (4:3) to 42" Plasma (livingroom)
34" (16:9) to 58" Plasma (basement theater)

In each case the new size felt foreign for a couple days. Now each room feels perfect and I'm sure going back down in size would be painful.

Enjoy the new set....always exciting unwrapping some new gear isn't it?

I'm going from a 32 to a 42 for my bedroom setup... I wasn't sure it would be a huge improvement when i looked at the frame measurements on the TV... but with the link crackin gave i definitely know it's plenty now

I hope so... actually I just hope I can calibrate the new TV to look as good as I have the current one! I'm goin from a 2007 model Panasonic LCD to the 42" G10 series plasma (also panasonic) so the calibration might be a bit more complex and time consuming

I actually went up from a 32"(my first LCD) to a 37"(my second) and it was a huge difference. The only thing is that eventually I kept wanting to go bigger and bigger. I then went to a 42" which was another very noticeable leap. I might have stayed there if the black levels were just a little deeper on my LG, not that they're bad, but I knew I could do better, and I really wanted the best I could afford in my living room. So then I went with the 50" Panny which satisfied my want for both better black levels and a bigger screen. If I had a 42" Panny instead of the LG I might have stayed with it, because that really is a good size in most living rooms, but as the saying goes...bigger is better! Even now I want a 58" or a 60" but I must admit that its not needed, and I'm not going to do it in the foreseeable future. Ugradeitis is a mofo! On a side note that G10 is going to blow your LCD out of the water. That's a good LCD, but you will see a huge difference in your viewing experience...guaranteed!
