I watched this last night projected at 120". No problems with audio whatsoever, and I was very happy with the transfer all things considered, some scenes are very soft, but this was native in the cinematography and a too shallow depth of field being utilized on some scenes and not the fault of the transfer, which is pretty good on the whole. It's not perfect, but it's the best the film has looked for home consumption. If anything, my biggest complaint is the light DNR use the film has received. I would have preferred them leave it completely untouched. But that would have gotten complaints about it being too grainy. The master has struck a fine balance here.

I watched this last night having not seen it for a number of years and the transfer is gorgeous. It has been beautifully restored and the extras are good too.

I just got my tracking number from Deep Discount. I'm crossing my fingers that I get a slipcover.

At least with wave 1, there weren稚 any copies without a slipcover. I知 not sure why they imply that there are, probably just to keep the possibility of releasing more copies open to them I assume.

I finished watching my copy. I thought the presentation was a mixed bag. Some scenes could look really good but some scenes had filtering that reminded me of the treatment that Fox did for most of Kazan's B&W films ("Boomerang" and "Panic in the Streets" specifically). The encoding was meh. There was a fair bit of banding/posterization.

Also, no true mono mix is a disappointment. Both audio tracks are filtered arse.

Agreed. While taking the film's age in to account, given it's supposedly taken from the recent 4K restoration it doesn't really look too much like I expected it to. Marks, etc, are gone, but it otherwise isn't really that big of a step up from the SD transfer. Especially in comparison to the War Of The Worlds release. It looks a touch soft for a 4K restoration. The few official reviews that it's had thus far have all made the same points.

I still consider it a huge step up from the old DVD (grayscale and detail are much better). Upon further re-evaluation it seems that, for roughly the first thirty minutes, a lessor element was generally used compared to the rest of the film hence having a more "managed" look at times.

Certainly... And agreed. Now I think about it, it did seem to improve later on. Comparatively anyway... It still beats the DVD, though a new extra feature or two would've been nice over the ancient ones. But I actually only paid $20 for my copy, so I can hardly complain.

I received my copy this afternoon but was a bit apprehensive about watching it after seeing some of the negative comments in this forum, having had such high hopes for it. But, when the first shot came on the screen, I breathed a sigh of relief. I thought it was a terrific transfer start to finish, especially considering the age of the film, and even though it isn't going to challenge Schindler's List 4K for black-and-white video supremacy, I had absolutely no complaints and felt it was worth every penny that I paid for it.

My copy also arrived today. I had time to spot check a few scenes, and I think it looks beautiful! I'm going to watch it from start to finish this evening.

There's DVDBeaver too--which, by chance, is how I realized this finally had a BluRay release. It's one of my top 10 movies of all time, so I have no idea how I missed this news...

And yet, I admit I'm still a bit hesitant to buy it just due to the extrremely high price everywhere I look (and the fact that I'm currently out of a job). The fact that, mono track aside, it has all of the SD features and nothing more, doesn't really help. So, I know this is a fool's request, but is it worth it? If I wait will the price go down (or will it just become rare?) And how likely is it that this might still eventually see a N American release (I'm still pretty shocked it never got the treatment years back).

I have this release and am very pleased with it, however Paramount has hinted that this will get a North American release in the future. I'm thinking next year, to coincide with its 70th anniversary.

Thanks for your feedback. The film is a fave, as I mentioned, and one I honestly revisit every few months. That said, compared to some other SD DVDs I have, it doesn't look awful and I probably can hold on to see if a local disc comes out next year (or if I get a lot of cash over Christmas I might just bite the bullet...)

I知 starting a mini marathon of Elizabeth Taylor films, and A Place in the Sun follows Butterfield 8 and Raintree County. I知 a huge fan of both Liz and Monty, yet these will be first viewings of all three. I知 especially excited to see A Place in the Sun. When I saw it recording on my DVR, I did a little dance.

Paramount seems to be on the ball, of late, with some long awaited films either now out on blu-Ray, or about to be released-Roman Holiday and the forthcoming The Greatest Show on Earth, which I have preordered, to name just a few. My hope is that A Place in the Sun and Ordinary People will soon be announced, though I壇 prefer that both got the Criterion treatment.

I知 half tempted to order this one, but I知 going to give it some more time.

In an interview for Roman Holiday, the head of Paramount home video (is that what she was? I can't remember) said that they are indeed working on this film, and implying it was to be part of the Paramount Presents line.
