I always wondered why they chose 714 (Babe Ruth's career homers) for that badge number.

From the old FAQ at badge714.com, which may or may not still be around...

What is the significance of the number 714, as in Badge 714?

There are multiple explanations for the use of this number. Jack Webb was a big Babe Ruth fan, and Ruth hit 714 home runs in his baseball career. The number is also said to be from Jack's mother's birthday (July 14th).

However, Laurie (Dragnet advisor and LAPD Sergeant Dan Cooke's daughter) also writes: Although plausible, these are not quite right. Sgt. Dan Cooke was closely associated with Jack Webb. He originated some of the script concepts and was the technical director for a number of the Dragnet episodes. Badge 714 was Sgt. Cooke's badge and was retired from the LAPD when Sgt. Cooke arranged for the use of his badge for the series. Sgt. Cooke has since passed away and the badge was donated by Cooke's widow to the LAPD Police Academy's Museum. You can see it there now—and the plaque next to the badge will validate this information.

Somewhat different subject; but who about the other Jack Webb series.Adam-12 and Emergency! It would be nice to have the complete Emergency! Made-for-TV Movies or 7th season unedited and on blu at least.

I would also add the Dragnet TV Series as well and Project UFO.

I have. Still own the old MCA VHS tape and the Universal Vault DVD. Really good movie. Like an extended episode of the 50's tv show but with a higher budget and in color of course.

Watched the movie for the first time ever last night on the new Blu-ray and I completely concur with your assessment. If you're a fan of the Dragnet TV series, you are going to find this movie thoroughly entertaining. I like how they included two aspect ratios, open matte and 1.75. I watched the 1.75 projected and it felt like traveling back in time to a movie theater in 1954.

Isn't the number 714 also stamped on quaaludes?
