A update for you.

Data: Disney+ scored big financial windfall with 'Mulan' streaming release - Yahoo Finance 9/16

Disney (DIS) took a calculated risk releasing its live-action “Mulan” remake on streaming service Disney+ — which new data suggests is paying off.

According to exclusive figures provided by analytics research firm 7Park Data, nearly 29% of U.S. households that subscribe to Disney+ purchased the $30 “Mulan” film through September 12th — far surpassing other popular (and free) titles on the platform.

During the company’s last earnings report, Disney said that the streaming platform has amassed over 60 million global subscribers. Assuming that U.S. households make up 50% of that total base (Disney has not yet broken out the exact number of U.S-based subscribers), 7Park’s data suggests that roughly 9 million users purchased the “Mulan” film for $30 a pop (29% of our estimated 30 million users.)

Under that scenario, net profits would pile up to $261 million for U.S. markets alone — and that’s on the conservative side.

Still, no matter how you slice it, the end result is a whole lot of cash for Disney — which will now maintain 100% of the profits verse a traditional theatrical release where box office revenue is normally split with theater chains.

Furthermore, Sensor Tower, an app download research firm, told Yahoo Finance that downloads of Disney+ spiked 68% from Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6, compared to one weekend prior.

Consumer spending in the app also spiked 193%, Sensor found, which can be attributed to customers paying the one-time $30 “Mulan” access fee.

To note, Disney has not yet provided any official numbers when it comes to “Mulan’s” performance, although CFO Christine McCarthy said the company is “very pleased” with what they’ve seen so far.

This graphics from research firm 7Park Data illustrates how many people might have watched it.

Now bring on the UHD BD version in 2 1/2 months.

$200M budget + $150M marketing

The Mulan PVOD runs from 9/4 to 11/4. Those are just the numbers from the first 2 weeks. Impressive!

Not as impressive as a cinema run would have been though.

During COVID-19 - that is what we are living with now. No way. It's not doing well in China which is where is was earmarked.

Remember, Mulan was supposed to go to theaters in March. That's how Disney racked up a $150M marketing spend.

No, I mean it’s not a substitute for the cinema all things being equal. That business model will be less profitable in the long run if/when we get back to normal.

China wise, it’s the controversy over the title that has made it a flop. China are seeing big numbers for other releases.

But all things aren't equal. It was a great move by Disney: Mulan PVOD. They knew they would need about $800 million or more at the BO just to break even on Mulan. No chance in hell of that happening. So they rolled the dice and so far it looks like they threw a seven.

The CFO said they will announce the results of the PVOD in their next investor conference call which is I believe November 4th.

The controversy was going to happen no matter what. But is it here and in China or just here in the US?

If you are referring to The Eight Hundred - totally different movie. One that invokes strong nationalism. Scheduled for the UK - you going to see it?

China BTW has almost 2X the number of screens that No. America does: 70,000 vs 40,000. That's why last year is was #2 in BO draw. This year it may be #1.

I won’t be seeing it, I saw Tenet though. Enjoyed it. I can’t see anything anyway until late next week as I’m self isolating.

Im hoping Bond doesn’t get cancelled, will be seeing that.

My most anticipated release is already lost, will have to wait until Oct 2021 for Halloween Kills.

Watched season one of Dark in UHD and IIRC the bit rate was < 9 Mbps. Took a break from it and watching another series.

$30 is more than I would pay for any PVOD title, especially knowing that it will eventually be available to purchase on disc or digital for substantially less.

I only have mild in interest in Mulan, so that's a big part of my reluctance as well.

Did the dark scenes show signs of blurryness, more pixelation than normal etc..?

I agree. Though I did pay the $20 for Bill and Ted Face the Music. I would have seen it in theaters but it wasn't playing near me. I had to support those guys and the movie was better than I expected.

I might be able to bring myself to pay $20 for a PVOD title, but it would have to be something that I was super excited to see. $20 is about what going to the cinema used to cost me when I was living in southern California, so I am kind of pre-conditioned to expect to pay that amount.

None of the PVOD titles offered so far this year have even begun to tempt me, though. I doubt that I would have seen any of them at the cinema had that been possible.

You say that this movie was better than expected; does that mean that you like it enough to buy it when it is released on disc?

Absolutely. I own the first 2 Bill and Ted movies as well. I was a teenager when they came out so the nostalgia factor is strong. Plus they're just a lot of fun. William Sadler steals the show as Death.

I won’t spend $20 to rent a streaming movie

I mean unless Pink Floyd the Wall is offered suddenly in 4K type of thing. (It’s stuck in SD for now.)

Even then, .... I would know the disc is coming and there’s plenty to do while I wait.

I would spend 3.99 if my kids really wanted to rent something. That’s my limit.

Mulan will be a Redbox rental for me. I will probably wait for a 2 for 1 promo code, so I will end up paying $0 for the rental. I've got a lot of problems on how the movie was made, (won't go into that here) but I do want to see it so I can judge for myself.

Still love redbox.

They always have promotions some apply automagically like the other day I rented 3 or 4 movies and that triggered a discount

I can check out stuff and see for myself if it’s worth buying and the titles that go to redbox do tend to go on sale a couple of months later.

I wound not buy from them anymore as the case and disc still say property of redbox and sometimes you get a disc that looks like it got run over.

The only thing better is my library because it loves to get Blu rays so it tends to have a lot of new releases. It’s now reopened by appointment.
