Anyone know why Hobbit is 6 disc compared to LOTR at 9? Are the Hobbit EE shorter/smaller than LOTR EE?

LOTR EEs are being split over two discs each. Hobbitses EEs are one disc each. Disc breakdown is thus:

FOTR: 1 disc theatrical, 2 disc EE
TTT: 1 disc theatrical, 2 disc EE
ROTK: 1 disc theatrical, 2 disc EE

total 9

AUJ: 1 disc theatrical, 1 disc EE
TDOS: 1 disc theatrical, 1 disc EE
TBOTFA: 1 disc theatrical, 1 disc EE

total 6

Cleaner picture allows for better compression, yes? Do you think this will be alright?

Managed to get an order in and while the page is still down, my order for the Hobbit Steelbook set was updated with official art. So here’s both side by side.

The Hobbitses are very clean and 'digital' looking so yeah, they'll have an easier time of it than the grainy shot-on-film LOTRs. But Warners' compression has been pretty good lately, so as long as they afford these things a healthy average bitrate and don't choke the discs with 57 different audio language options then they'll be fine. And on the 2-disc LOTR EEs there will be no excuses, each film will have a minimum of 132GB to play with (2x UHD66)

Seeing that makes me want RotK changed even more now that Gollum is on two covers. It could have been an epic Pelennor Fields battle scene with Oliphants in front of Minas Tirith to contrast with BotFA cover...

If you go with one Set, you'll need the other Set to Match

Otherwise it's just barbaric

This is why I'm unfortunately going for the standard LOTR set since this Hobbit set doesn't have a gift set version announced. So sad...

It would be a bad decision not to have a Hobbit giftset also. That is strange. I don't want one giftset and one regular version.

We know LOTR is getting Dolby Atmos, knowing full well this is.

Smaug's Voice will boom the rooms!

Exactly.

Which is why I'll likely go for the steelbooks.

What would they include with a Hobbit gift set? Another ring?

I just hooked up a 2nd sub a couple weeks ago and watching that scene via Vudu was intense. I can't wait to experience that via 4K disc
