The sources were Nivida Shield Pro 2019 and Roku Ultra 2019, the content was Star Wars Episode II - Attack Of The Clones in UHD with Atmos audio. The providers were Disney+, MoviesAnywhere and Vudu.

Nivida
Disney+ ● did not try as it only does Dolby Digital+ sound when connected direct to the AVP
MoviesAnywhere ● movie would not play and displayed error message
Vudu ● movie played with Atmos sound

Roku
Disney+ ● movie played with Dolby Digital+ sound
MoviesAnywhere ● movie played with Dolby Digital+ sound
Vudu ● movie played with Atmos sound

With the Nivida and Roku connected to the AVP the movie played with Atmos sound from both devices and all services except Nvidia and Disney+.
My Nvidia Shield sends Disney+ with Atmos to my AVR without issue...

Dolby Surround for TV shows started in the 80's (ALF?). I designed and built a Dolby Surround compatible encoder and installed in Post Audio around 1987. Obviously we could not refer to our local productions as having Dolby Surround but it was fun for us that knew to listen thru a DS decoder. We did get the official encoder around 1992 or 1993.

I do the same with several other providers like Netflix, Amazon, Vudu and MoviesAnywhere. The best that I can tell the
Disney+ app on the Nvidia is looking for a sink device that is UHD and HDR. The Sony VW600 projector is 4K and UHD but no HDR. As noted, Disney+ with Atmos works fine on the Roku.

I was taking an audit of my existing pre-orders and I'd say starting next week until December, and possibly the end of the year, I will have a ton of new 4K/BD material (physical media). All of these announcements have been dropping in the past couple of days, so that's neat. WB coming through with a ton of catalogue releases including those nifty LOTR & Hobbit sets.

I have that Friday the 13th Shout Factory set due next week along with Arrow Video's release of Mallrats and District 9. Man, its gonna be sweet!

Ah, yes, I forgot about that; you are correct, the Disney+ app on the Shield needs to be connected to a device that supports both UHD and HDR in order to pass Atmos. I remember this being discussed (and complained about) on the Nvidia message boards.

Just for a update, my sister is back in hospital (I can’t remember if I told you guys she got out, I don’t know where I am at the moment). She blacked out so no choice but to go back in. She has had COVID for 23 days now. Her hubby is still in hospital and on oxygen.

Hope everyone is well. Some good 4K stuff above!

It terms of NAS and servers,

I have an audio and a video server but I’m kind of over making a DIY kaleidoscape type system having done that previously. I did put most of my discs onto a DIY server but having rebuilt my movie racks I prefer just loading the discs directly to having 40TB of hard drives grinding 24/7.

My Audio library is a much more manageable size and makes a lot more sense to keep and use a dedicated audio only server. A lot of my high res audio comes from Blu rays which are clumsy to navigate esp when the display is off. So having the audio server is great.

I have my Synology hibernate the drives after a 30 minutes of no use, basically a sleep mode. Another option is a timer that you set for when the drivers are active.

I've been in theaters lately. I even saw The Empire Strikes Back!! Woo-hoo. The wife and I had covid in July and don't worry too much about it now. We still mask up though for the fragile society we've now become.

NPD: Pandemic, Delayed Amazon Prime Days Will Upend ‘Black Friday’ Retail Holiday

Quote:
The traditional Black Friday weekend start of the holiday shopping season is in disarray this year, upended by the COVID-19 pandemic and Amazon’s rescheduling of its Prime Days from the summer to October, The NPD Group said Oct. 9.

Amazon rescheduled its Prime Days to Oct. 13-14 — just 44 days before Black Friday on Nov. 27.

Last year, the Amazon Prime Days e-commerce sales extravaganza was the third-largest online shopping period, after Thanksgiving’s Black Friday and successive Cyber Monday retail events, according to The NPD Group.

This year’s delay to mid-October promises to significantly alter the winter retail landscape, say NPD analysts.

“Prime Days’ timing later in the year creates a pull to move aggressive holiday campaigns earlier, and opens the door for deals from retailers of all sizes,” Marshal Cohn, chief industry advisor, retail at NPD, said in a statement.

I had hoped no news was good news, but we'll get there. I remain hopeful that your sister and brother-in-law will fully recover.

I have decided that attending the cinema is an entirely unnecessary risk, so until this pandemic is behind us I will not be going to it or to any other public performance venue.

I don't know if anyone saw this, but a Grand Jury in Texas has indicted Netflix over their offering the French movie Cuties.

Texas grand jury indicts Netflix for allegedly promoting lewd material over the film 'Cuties'

"A Tyler County grand jury on Tuesday charged the streaming platform for the "promotion of lewd visual material depicting a child," accusing the film of appealing "to the prurient interest in sex" and saying it has "no literary, artistic, political, or scientific value," according to a copy of the indictment obtained by CNN."

https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/08/enter...rnd/index.html

I have not seen this movie, but my sister, who has a daughter, has seen it and she does not understand why people are so upset. She thinks that if those critical of the movie would actually watch it, they would see that it is not "lewd" at all. I am of the impression that this is just another contrived issue for people to feel outraged over and primarily by people that have not even seen the movie.

Netflix has said "This charge is without merit and we stand by the film." We'll see how long that lasts; it would not surprise me to see them cave in and remove the movie from their service.

People are idiots. They condemn a documentary based only on presumptions.

Why Netflix May Not Be Concerned About an Indictment Over 'Cuties'

Now you have responses from both sides. I strongly suggest no further posts are needed on such a sensitive subject. Proceed under your own risk.

It could be a minefield topic if people respond emotionally about a movie that they probably have not even seen, but a streaming service being indicted over any work of art is the core issue that I am discussing. Given the ephemeral nature of subscription streaming and the ease with which they can remove content, this film could be pulled at any time.

If this were available on physical media, those who chose to own it would be immune from this latest attempt to suppress a movie, but content on subscription streaming services can go "poof" and disappear just that fast.

I do not need, and I do not want, any government entity determining what is permissible for me to view. I do not need self-appointed "morality police" to make judgments for me, either. I am an adult that is fully capable of making decisions for myself.

Lastly, it is not the monetary fine that might spook Netflix, but the continued bad publicity. No company likes sustained bad press and Netflix could decide that the easiest thing to do here is to drop the movie.

My wife and I have been to the movies a couple of times. The theaters near us are actually doing a great job with social distancing and following guidelines. No one was within 12 feet of us and masks are mandatory. I certainly felt safer there than some of the other places I've been near us.

Sorry to hear and about your family. I wish you and them the best,
