Guess they have to do it steel because it will be only the theatrical version for now. I've heard many fans saying they rather wait another 1-2 years for the extended director's cut which will be released together with the next part, The Hobbit.

Same here. I told myself that I will not buy any theatrical versions of LOTR. Now I might have to change that stance, if they are SteelBooks.

Those steels look great. Sod the price, I wants them.

BUT - are there forced German subs when watching with English audio? If not, are the elvish subs in English, and if so are they burnt-in or player-generated?

I see, but if you don't open the Steelbook the movie stay in the case.
I'm not opening my steelbooks so I don't care if the movies is good or not.
My collection of "movies" get opened. (amaray)
