I'm very surprised for the demand on Tarr. But its good news for future releases I'm sure. Still sucks that we may never know what that 300 limited editions would have been. They for sure weren't a piece of cardboard haha.

Looks like more breathtaking work from Arbelos and the Hungarian National Film Institute!
I've now seen the Arbelos/HNFI restoration of Damnation. In a word: revelatory. No one should hesitate once this one hits the market.

I hope they get all of Tarr’s films!

I was hoping the slipcover would’ve lasted a little longer until I got paid yesterday but that’s what happens I guess. I’ll pick it up sometime down the road. I’ve waited this long for my most anticipated for years, so I can wait until it’s 50% off or more later down the road. Prioritizing other LEs/CEs right now.

I bought the Artificial Eye (UK) edition in the spring. Didn't want to wait. I'll be getting the Arbelos edition, though, for the extras.

I confess that if Sátántangó was the first of Tarr's films I saw, I might have been all WTF!?!?! But The Turin Horse (which I loved) got me used to his methodical and engaging rhythms.

The first Tarr film I saw was Damnation, then Werckmeister Harmonies. So by the time I got to Satantango I was totally ready for it. The Man from London and The Turin Horse were icing on the cake after that.

Did anyone buy Satantango from the Arbelos site? Did they charge you right away?

Hi Arbelos fans,

We sincerely hope this note finds you in good health amidst the ongoing COVID19 pandemic.

First off, we’d like to issue an apology. We realize in hindsight that we overlooked our commitment to newsletter subscribers and you weren’t given first chance to pre-order the Sátántangó blu-ray, and subsequently the limited edition slipcases sold out in less than 24hrs. To amend this oversight, we’re producing another 500 slipcase editions, and are happy to share this link for pre-orders. We won’t be publicly advertising the reprint until December 1st, and to anyone who ordered a regular edition after the initial 500 were sold out, you will be receiving a slipcase version, as well.

We’re also including some surprise extras with the slipcase sets, as a thank you for your patience and understanding. All limited edition slipcase orders will also be receiving a Sátántangó “Szunet” intermission filmstrip bookmark and a postcard with a message from Béla Tarr.
Plus a limited vinyl available for preorder for email subscribers.

Didn't even know they had a newsletter until now I just signed up for it, but may be too late for this offer...Not a big fan of how they have been doing things so far...

So while not advertised yet, if you order Satantango direct right now you should receive the slipcover and extras?

Yeah, it’s still available, for what it’s worth.

Thankfully I had some funds to throw at it right now. Thanks for upping it to 1000, Arbelos.

Default Onward and Upward!

The recent Arbelos blu-ray release of SATANTANGO is the culmination of nearly four years of tremendous work and a bitter-sweet ending to my time with Arbelos.

I co-founded the company with colleagues from Cinelicious/Cinelicous Pics in March of 2017. Our mutual love of arthouse and world cinema, as well as our strong desire to showcase lost or forgotten films of the past inspired us to form a new company from the ashes of Cinelicious. I'm extremely proud of the work we did together.

BELLADONNA OF SADNESS, PRIVATE PROPERTY, FUNERAL PARADE OF ROSES, THE LAST MOVIE, SATANTANGO and SON OF THE WHITE MARE are restorations that will remain very, very special to me. I need to thank my co-founders David Marriott, Ei Toshinari and Dennis Bartok for greatly expanding my cinema knowledge and experience. The shocking awakening that was BELLADONNA and even more so with FUNERAL PARADE was refreshing and deepened my already great love of cinema. All of our releases expanded my ideas of what cinema was, or could be. I hope they did yours too.

Arbelos will continue on. They've in fact already acquired two more Hungarian gems, Bela Tarr's DAMNATION and Marcell Jankovics' JANOS VITEZ. These were both restored by the Hungarian Film Archive, with Arbelos serving only as distributor. I've also agreed to complete the 4K restoration of another as-yet-announced film.
As for me? Nothing will stop me from continuing to do what I love and big plans are afoot. Expect an announcement soon.

Until then, keep buying blu-rays and supporting the small boutique labels that bring them to you!

Thank you for all that you have done. I think I have all of the Arbelos releases to date (even though I have yet to watch them all). I too, look forward to reading what your future plans are. Best wishes to you!
