Do they still play 4K in the app tho?

There are a handful of shots in TTT which look pretty bad, smeary as hell, and almost DVD definition. But that’s not the whole movie. When it switches back to the native 4K stuff, you notice the difference. The smeary shots appear to be mostly VFX shots which have always looked that way, though there are some more innocuous shots with the same sort of smeariness - one supposes that these have some “invisible” VFX enhancements, or perhaps the original negative couldn’t be discovered for everything. I also wonder if some of those shots were digitally zoomed-in, hence the overzealous DNR in the first place.

But calling those few shots proof this is just an upscale of the existing DI is disingenuous.

If it was what PJ intended, why did he only apply it to Fellowship of the Ring? Makes no sense to me. It's not matching to anything.

Can we please get an actual screenshot of the 4K here so this hokey phone camera comparison stops floating around?

Now I have a delay on my Best Buy steelbooks order where, if they don’t ship by Dec. 8th, my order is cancelled. I pre-ordered these soon after they showed up on the site. Does BBY fulfill orders in random order or by first come first serve?

Riddles in the dark.....

OK - so I might have the answer as to why some UK guys haven't received their orders.

I just went to exchange my steel set in HMV in-store (my first disc of Fellowship EE is scratched and glitches). They didn't have any copies in as they were issued a disclaimer saying there was a 'manufacturing error'. Only LOTR, and not Hobbitses. They said that Amazon have issued delays too - so this might be what's holding up people's sets being despatched?

What this error is they didn't know of course. Could just be labels maybe? They said they had heard they might have them in-store by the end of the week from what they'd heard.

As for my steels - I've given them back and now have a credit note which will have to be used to buy the regular now. Bye bye steelbooks

You've got a HMV branch open near you? I thought they were all closed for lockdown!

I'm in Wales, so we've had different devolved rules for certain things to England. Don't ask!

Interesting. So I ordered mine on line from JB-Hi Fi in Oz to take advantage of the Black Friday sales as I couldn’t get to a store. Noticed nothing shipped yesterday. Saw it on the shelves in a JB Hi Fi store yesterday for a much inflated price.

Then just now got an email advising there was stock issues and I wont get mine until mid December. Does make you wonder if there is an issue with the product.

I’m in no rush. I am actually awaiting two Atmos speakers to arrive before watching them so am happy to be patient.

yes it does. I'm sure we'll hear soon enough.

Although for those that have it and have watched them all already, nothing has been reported thus far....

FOTR's theatrical cut bluray was a dated soft mess with DNR. They made a new transfer of FOTR for the EE release. TTT and ROTK's EE didn't get a new transfer for the 2012 bluray release. That's one reason why only FOTR received a new color grade.

Back in 2000 Jackson and his crew used FOTR to learn how to digitally color grade a DI in computer. Jackson and WETA were enamored with the process and the freedom and control it gave them, and its pretty clear with the original color grading that their enthusiasm got the better of them. They laid it on a bit thick compared to the color grading of TTT and ROTK. Rivendell is slathered in a garish tint. Skin tones lean too far into magenta. And blacks and shadows too frequently lean to blue. Which is I suspect another reason why Jackson redid the color grade of FOTR for the 2012 transfer. Jackson's 2012 revision wasn't a complete success.

That was 8+ years ago and now we have 4k and HDR and Dolby Vision. So naturally Jackson refined and altered the color grading again for the new 4K version.

Um. No. They’re not taking products off the shelves to ship, it ships from the warehouse. If there’s none in the warehouse due to all the online demand, there will be a waiting period. I once ordered the special edition of Fury online when there was stock, and, after two weeks, they advised me it was sold out and my order couldn’t be fulfilled. And that was after two weeks of there being copies on shelves on stores.

There’s nothing wrong with the set.

I guess I should be happy that my set was delayed until today, doubtless due to the snow in Ohio where it's coming from (I'm in western Pa.). Out for delivery from my local FedEx hub for today!
