He's giving a very dumbed down explanation. It looks like he mostly used colour grading to fix "imperfections" , and he said as much. But there's no perceptible loss of detail in the VFX.

The only thing he really went to town on regrading was the Ent battle. ROTK and Fellowship are so damn close to their original timing most won't even notice a difference. Especially with ROTK.

What I want to know now is did he indeed make the grain more fine to make faux 65mm, or make it closer to digital. Or just stuck between a rock and hard place with how sharp the scan was.

Well, that was an experience. I went to my local BestBuy this morning to return my The Hobbit steelbook set (as it arrived damaged) and they had no steelbooks of either set, nor any standard versions at all. I then drove to two other BestBuys only to find the same (incidentally, I never go to these two and was shocked at the state of their physical media, mine is great and these had an abysmal selection).

I finally went to two local Targets and simply bought the standard version instead (of which they had several of each set.)

I suspected the steelbooks might be a tough find but am shocked that almost no one seemed to have the standard versions on release day.

I hope I have better luck. My BB Steel has been 30 miles away for four days, and is now seemingly stuck in an endless loop of distribution centers. I'm expecting the worst at this point.

Has nothing to do with USPS if they aren’t even shipping the package until the 1st...that is if they didn’t delay it themselves. It’s a Best Buy problem not a shipping problem.

Unless you’re content with the standard release, that decision may have already been made for you.

That's code for "it's being delicately and carefully handled by Ace Ventura"!

BDA hasn't approved the use of discs that large. As for the movie length, they probably could fit the movies on single discs if not for language options and subtitle options but it would suffer compression issues. Thankfully as someone else mentioned, we aren't in the 2-sided LD era any longer.

Edit: Another reason they don't use discs that large is probably due to the physical limitations of the optical laser reading capabilities for a long form feature kind of similar to how there are issues with publishing DV to discs full scale.

Using the footage from that BTS video for comparison, which I assume is how the BD will look like (ignore the macroblocking):

You ignored the part where I said 4K BD players will not play anything bigger than a BD-100. They cannot. There may be larger discs but they are not in the specs of the format.

Just doing a quick test of Fellowship on Apple TV now it’s upgraded to 4K. Is there any grain?
Am admittedly pretty tired and not sure if TV may have gone into some mad noise reduction mode, there’s a spray and pray micro that user around these days. But it’s looking extremely “clean”. I’ll have to get the blurays out to do a sanity check.

Anyone else getting that?

EDIT: I’m clearly tired. The grain is there just very fine. Will have to give this a proper watch and eyeball against the bluray. The detail looks great, pretty excited, but wonder if it’s over tweaked.

NOTE: I’ll be getting the 4K SDR stream and we’re talking 16-20Mbps with iTunes streaming and obviously not a disc (which I’ll wait for a sale).

Yep. The last time I ordered from them was when King Kong (2005) was released on Blu-ray. They had it in stock, but it took something like a month-and-a-half to ship, I couldn't get through to anyone there, etc. Under different ownership during the DVD days, they were amazing and I ordered every DVD from them. Sad to see a company go to hell like that.
