"Grain Management" doesn't really bother me on a film, when it's done carefully by people who know what they're doing and preserves the integrity of the image. If the films don't have that waxy look, and you can still see a fine-layer of grain in the image, they should be perfectly fine.

I definitely find Peter Jackson's comments interesting about "uniformity." He certainly wasn't considering that when actually making The Hobbit trilogy, seeing as they were shot to be presented in 3D HFR. I wonder if he regrets those choices now in retrospect.

People are seriously analyzing why Peter Jackson used "cinematic" instead of "filmic"? See, this is my one and only real issue with these forums sometimes...

The mobsessiveness over minutiae is staggering sometimes. I can't imagine Peter Jackson writes down what he says before filming a featurette to make sure he's not substituting a word here and there that others are then going to try and dissect for another meaning altogether.

It's the same with the endless barrage of exaggerations concerning the picture quality. It's not even the never-ending debate of DNR or no DNR (it's a forum, debates will always be part and parcel of them), but some members literally claiming here and in other threads that a UHD disc is no better than decades-old DVDs or a simple upscale of something else or a total abomination, etc et ad infinitum... Or, my personal favorite, when laserdiscs become their go-to's for the immaculate picture quality that the Blu-ray or UHD just didn't quite get.

Hahahaha! Anyway, as everyone else, I just had to write something down. Sometimes the madness is too much to just spectate.

Happy viewing and/or bemoaning everyone!

Sure leaves me with the impression that the LOTR Trilogy was DNRed to make it look more like a contemporaneously digitally shot movie, ala the Hobbit Trilogy.
I never found the look of the LOTR trilogy to be inconsistent. I really don't know what he's talking about. It's why I never bought his bullshit reason for adding the green tint on the Blu-ray.

They've been around for 20 years.

Ever think that maybe - just maybe - it's the USPS that has been slow to update their tracking info? The USPS has been sketchy at best the last six months no matter who I've ordered from in keeping their tracking info up to date. I've had things delivered and in my hand from various retailers that didn't even show as shipped from the USPS this year.

Non inconsistent within the trilogy - though he does point out he finished LOTR 1 differently than LOTR 2 and 3.

I think his talking about the consistency between the hexalogy.

A wonderful plan, I grant you. But not one I'd even dare dream in this foul year.

The more disc’s there are the more they can charge. It has nothing to do with being lazy to switch them out it’s just the point in having all this tech yet can’t put a 4+ movie on 1 disc’s. One of the selling points of Blu-ray was how much they can hold yet they can’t really hold any more then what dvd’s can.
One thing people don't realize is that it can be very difficult to get approval for any menu changes between formats. Once Jackson decided to use the particular chapter and disc count for DVD NL/WB had a signed off layout. If they repeat that layout on subsequent formats that is then one less design for the set they have to get Jackson to sign off on again, because they can "grandfather" in his previous approval for chapters, chapter menu pictures, and general menu layout, including the use of two discs for the LOTR EEs.

It's a sickness. Most filmmakers have it. Someone ushers in some new tech toys and they go loony like Thorin. Regarding Jackson himself, people have made mentions and tip-toed around it since 2002. Ah well. I still kinda like the guy.

But my god, if you wanted to make one trilogy "match" the other, shouldn't LOTR be the standard? Oof.

At this point I don't believe he did add the green tint, I think it was mistake that happened with final mastering that was never corrected by the studio to avoid a costly disc-recall. So it was left in as "creator intent," in the same way as the flipped audio channels on the DVD of Star Wars was "intent."

This is true. I even sent one package out and not only did the tracking NEVER once update, it never even showed as being received by USPS.

The package did eventually arrive though, a week after expected so maybe it just common mistakes of not scanning packages or whatnot.

TTT has new grading for the night scenes of Treebeard/Pippin/Merry and Frodo/Sam when they are captured by Faramir. The Treebeard/Pippin/Merry scenes used to be a heavy teal/blue filter, and now they they are much more natural night/dark tint. The Frodo/Sam/Faramir scenes used to be a heavy teal/blue filter, now they are essentially night/just before dawn or just after dusk scenes.

Personally I think they look much better now, but YMMV.

A couple effects shots were also tweaked for the theatrical versions.

In TTT TH, the shot of Faramir and company looking down on Osgiliath used to have generic mountains in the background rather than Minas Tirith - MT only appeared in the EE. The TH now has MT.

In ROTK TH, the shot of Aragorn first seeing the spirit of the King of the Dead in the pathway had a less distinct presence of his spirit, but was more distinct in the EE. Now the TH also has the more distinct presence of the King of the Dead, too.

sooooo,

i did not get my box set today, but i did get a delivery estimate. december 17 - january 4. needless to say, i am not really happy. also, i used an AMEX promo deal to get $20 off. i am pretty much stuck. IF this drops in price, which i assume it will not, do i get that price? also, it has to ship before that, no? that is just nuts.

Just my initial impressions of the first ~30 minutes of The Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition:

I’m not a technical wizard, so I have no way of providing measurements, nor can I ascribe to say that I have GeoffyVision™. What I can say, to my naked eye, is that while there does seem to be a slight bit of grain management going on, it is certainly NOT a DNR botch job. I would go so far as to say that it didn’t even receive the same amount of grain management that Back to the Future received, and I thought that looked lovely. There is a fine layer of grain there, just don’t expect the graininess of, say, the recent Top Gun UHD. The green tint is gone (and I’m watching on my Sony A8H which already leans green), fine textures pop, and colors are robust. Shadow and highlight detail, to my eye, are quite good.

This is my favorite film of all time. Having never seen it in theaters, and only going off my prior experiences with the DVDs and Blu-rays, this is, without a doubt, the best the film has ever looked on home video. I... I love it.

I did wonder if those night shots had been changed due to the improved black levels. There's no need to compensate with a filter.

You are just reinforcing what I'm saying. He's went mostly faithful, but tweaking where tweaking makes sense.

I'd never have remembered all the differences between theatrical and EE. I've been nothing but EE since 04.

Got the Hobbit, Lord of the Rings and Coming to America in a single envelope from Amazon. No dings on anything shockingly. The packaging is much smaller than I thought it would be in a good way.

I'm not sure when I'll be able to get around to watching them but happy to say this is the last time I'll ever have to buy them and that the reviews are fairly good.

I don't understand why wanting the extended editions on one disc has upset people so much. If I could have the same quality picture and sound on one disc as I could on two, I think it would be awesome. If I have to pee during the film, that is what the pause button is for, regardless of what I am watching on whatever number of discs.
