I would go so far as to say that it didn’t even receive the same amount of grain management that Back to the Future received, and I thought that looked lovely. There is a fine layer of grain there, just don’t expect the graininess of, say, the recent Top Gun UHD. The green tint is gone (and I’m watching on my Sony A8H which already leans green), fine textures pop, and colors are robust. Shadow and highlight detail, to my eye, are quite good.

This is my favorite film of all time. Having never seen it in theaters, and only going off my prior experiences with the DVDs and Blu-rays, this is, without a doubt, the best the film has ever looked on home video. I... I love it.

I'd say the UHD is pretty much bang on to what you seen in cinema in 01.

For those that are super picky about alphabetizing and organizing your collections, what do you do with Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit?

In the past, I'd file Hobbit under H and Lord of the Rings under L. In recent years, I decided to start grouping sequels together. For instance, Road Warrior would be after "Mad Max" despite it starting with R.

With Lord of the Rings, I don't know if I want to file it under "Lord of the Rings" and put it before or after, or just put it under H since while they are in the same universe, they aren't really sequels/prequels.

Tough decisions.

It's not mass spreading of erroneous information about transfers, so doesn't bother me if people want to debate that.

And just like that, I now have a UPS tracking number which shows for tomorrow. Why do Best Buy worry us so much?

Ups delivered the steelbook set in a loosely packed box. Miraculously there are no dents or dings. All discs have finger prints I could send off to forensics, only 2nd disc of Two Towers EE has a small scratch. Hoping against hope it plays ok.

Has Peter Jackson ever commented about adding Martin Freeman in the opening of LOTR?

Could file all 6 films under M for Middle Earth saga.

Personally, I'd keep 'em separate. But if you're sticking to your sequel grouping,LoTR came first, so it goes first. The Hobbit movies start with you expecting to know who Frodo is anyways, so are they even really prequels? Makes ya think....

This is definitely a tough one, but I have mine arranged like this:
-Lord of the Rings original animated movie
Lord of the Rings theatrical editions (I have the very first release of that where all three Blu-rays and all three bonus DVDs are in one case)
-An Unexpected Journey theatrical cut (Target exclusive)
-Desolation of Smaug theatrical cut (Target exclusive)
-Battle of the Five Armies (Target exclusive)
-Fellowship of the Ring extended edition
-Two Towers extended edition
-Return of the King extended edition
-An Unexpected Journey extended edition
-Desolation of Smaug extended edition
-Battle of the Five Armies extended edition

And because I got the SteelBooks for the 4K, they’re in a separate spot in their fancy boxes from the rest.

For those extended Blu-rays, they all came in the trilogy box sets, but I keep the boxes stored and just have them in their cases on the shelf.

Tl;dr: they’re under “L” starting with the animated movie, then the theatrical LotR, then the theatrical Hobbit, then extended LotR, then extended Hobbit.

I enjoyed the brief video that WB put out, but guys...

... what if that was the one new special feature on next year's "ultimate" box set?

Gulp.

Tbh I stopped trusting Peter Jackson when he not only used f***ing GOPRO shots in a Middle Earth movie, but later doubled down on how great the shots were....

Nothing wrong with a filmmaker liking the kinetic energy of a shot even when the image resolution doesn't match.

Just file them under "T" since they all start with "The".

Just got back from Best Buy. The BB in Union Square was completely sold out UGHHH.
Was starting to worry that I may have to scour the city for a copy tonight. Thankfully there were more than a few copies at another BB 10 min away.

Quickly popped in The Ride of the Rohirrim chapter in ROTK. It looks and sounds spectacular! The sun rising behind the army is a visual treat

On to FOTR...

100 gigs can hold 100 hours of shittiest quality... Its how good quality you want. Great quality takes alot of space...

I was through with Deep Discount years ago for the same reason because they're nothing but pathological liars and cheaters. I called and gave them a piece of my mind, told them good riddance and hung up on them and never looked back. I bet they'll remember slimdude!
