Dropped $130 on the Best Buy exclusive Steelbooks. Patiently waited months. Went to the store to pick it up at long last and all three movies have been spine slashed. No store within 250 miles has a replacement copy and the website is bereft of stock, as well. FM2020L.

I think it's two, possibly three years old now! Just biding my time until 75" OLED prices become more friendly lol.

You're right - no longer avail:

From the pictures, I thought you had an OLED because the blacks were so deep.

Dave's LOTR 4K Saga, Extended Edition

I ordered LOTR 4K from Best Buy site 11/29, because it read like
they were not stocking it in stores.
I learned last night, they are having it in stores, but limited inventory.

Today, BB site still said "we are still getting your order ready".
It didn't seem right there was no change in status &
I could not cancel my order.
BB online chat is always down.

I called BB an hour ago, 1-888-237-8289.
After a few menu options "Other" I got a live person,
who said my order was on backorder.
Really, it didn't say backorder on my order status.
But the agent was able to cancel my order. I got a cancel email from BB.

Then I went to Target & got it.

Thank you for sharing those screenshots. I have the 65” 900e and it’s a really good LED. I mostly use it for gaming, but it’s stunning for movies as well.

Is there any confirmation on whether the Ultimate Edition will be a 6 movie set?

From the very first post on the very first page!

Warner Bros. is also announcing that in the summer of 2021 it will be releasing a 4K ULTIMATE COLLECTORS’ EDITION with theatrical and extended versions of ALL SIX of the remastered films and new bonus content. Additionally, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first The Lord of the Rings film, a newly remastered Blu-ray trilogy of The Lord of the Rings films will be available in the Fall of 2021, also including the theatrical and extended versions.
Who would’ve thought that info on the first page!

I wonder if they'll have different sets that include the supplements? I'm not really a fan of the Hobbit series, but if I have to buy that set for those supplements. I wouldn't mind owning both of them.

Happy day! Amazon hustled and got both trilogies to me today despite the last update stating LOTR wouldn't arrive until Thursday.

Currently spinning Fellowship in the UB820 and it looks miiiiiighty nice.
The Dolby Vision is just... *chef's kiss*

I'll probably buy regardless but a user already posted a review on the official bluray review and says there is a lot of DNR. Do you agree with that?

I expect The Godfather trilogy to sell as fast too once that comes out in 2022.
I saw those eBay listings and I can't even fathom how someone could pay that much for the trilogy, as much as I love it myself. I couldn't even justify the $30 premium over the regular edition just for some "Nicer cases."

Not to mention how the eBay dude got ahold of that many to begin with. My God.

Just finished Fellowship and man oh man it looks great! There’s definitely some DNR but the presentation is so great I hardly noticed. The colors and contrast are gorgeous. Glad I talked my wife into getting the LG CX a couple weeks ago.

Sampled a few scenes from the first movie. Looks pretty solid overall. A bit of a shame they took down the grain. It doesn't look particularly waxy or anything, but I like how 4K grain shimmers.

I just looked on Amazon, how can this be $200. So is this sold out now then, as I cannot find this anywhere and I thought the release date was today.

Still widely available in-store according to Best Buy and Target sites. Can confirm there were 4-5 pristine copies at my closest Target when I bought one around 5PM.

How much grain were in these movies to begin with? Remember they came out between 2001-2003 not in the 80s

My Two Towers was spine slashed but not the other 2. Honestly I think I am more bothered by the mismatching height of all the spine titles. I actually really like the simplicity of the outer box housing the steels, so I won't be displaying the set spine-out anyway. I might even just put the steels in the box backwards, spine-in, so I never have to really look at the spines. It actually looks pretty good like this.

I've tried to not let small imperfections like this bother me as much as they used to. Ordering physical media online is becoming more and more unavoidable, especially with collector's sets like this. It also doesn't help that the quality of packaging for shipping seems to have dropped quite a bit in recent years across every major retailer.

Grain should be present in all film that is recorded in 35mm, no matter when. 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, now. Doesn't matter. It's a different story if the movie is shot with digital cameras. The Hobbit movies were shot with digital cameras but the LOTR movies were shot with 35mm film.

Clear, fine layer of refined grain throughout, very easy on the eye's IMHO, not even close to the level of "management" I saw at times in "The Goonies" (and even that was a decent looking effort overall, this release smokes that when you add in all the other factors, especially the color and HDR...the "they have a troll" scene is a stunner now as far as shadow details go without having to raise blacks into grey territory).
Part of it is I'd say that LOTR was always a bit heavy with the makeup on certain characters(Frodo, Legolas, Merry and Pippin) so there is some "waxy" look that's inherent to the source material but its not due to detail smoothing.

I think with the grading as well what you see is that LOTR generally was a bit rough and ready. The scale of the production and so much location work did mean that you have quite a few shots were the lighting isn't really optimal, there are some quite harsh daytime shots that make the colours of the makeup, wigs, costumes, etc stand out rather.
