Picked up both LOTR and Hobbit Steelbook version of both at Best Buy yesterday in a snow storm. This is a really nice set. No dents on the case or individual movies. Appear to be sold out, but I would say pay the extra dollars and snag one if you can find them. Hopefully they will get more in stock.

In my layman's opinion the 4Ks are not as "uniform" as Jackson's video suggests. FOTR still has the most color filters for example. The broader dynamic range simply allows those filters to "breathe" easier. (And the lack of extreme green color timing looks so much better, to me reconfirming that was a mistake on the BDs).
Personally, I feel the 4Ks are a much more rewarding presentation than any previous home video release. Also, despite Jackson's statement, I don't think the LOTR films look all that similar to The Hobbit series photographically - at least not any more than before as intentionally done when they made The Hobbit. The only real conformity in LOTR relative to the Hobbit are in the visual effects being composited more convincingly between the different element layers. |

Even still, if the shot gives the intended effect for the story that Jackson was going for - a particular kinetic vibe, for example - then it's not a "wrong" choice. Jackson accepting the resolution/aesthetic tradeoff to get the POV/angle/etc. he wanted is his to make. Clearly he felt it was worth it in that instance.
