Agreed. Any one of those companies would be buying the studio primarily to bolster their respective streaming platforms, meaning a lack of emphasis on physical releases. I would much prefer another traditional film company, like Sony or something, but them instead, but from what I’ve read, MGM is most interested in selling to a company like the three you mentioned.

As we near the end of 2020 it's worth looking back at what we did get this year from Scream Factory and reflecting on the fact that overall, despite the challenges, 2020 was actually a pretty solid year of releases. The last 6 months have been disappointing from an announcement perspective, but overall the year has actually been rather kind to us. Admittedly I have expressed my displeasure with the lack of new announcements on more than one occasion during the previous 2-3 months, but even with the lull 2020 turned out pretty well for Scream Factory.
Full List: [Show spoiler] Standouts for the year include the highly coveted long time coming Collections edition release of the Friday the 13th series, but other long requested note worthy additions to the line that are easily forgotten/overlooked because of the year we've had include My Bloody Valentine Uncut and remastered, Pet Sematary 2, April Fools Day, Tales from the Darkside, Graveyard Shift, the re-releasing of Vincent Price collection Vol. 1, and The Brides of Dracula. Ignoring that not all months were created equal, we averaged 5 releases per month and this doesn't take into account that multifilm releases like the aforementioned Friday the 13th Collection, Vincent Price Collection, and Universal Horror Vol. 4, 5 and 6, all included multiple films. 2020 went out with a whimper from Scream Factory but if you ignore that and look back on the year as a whole, it was actually a pretty solid turnout and arguably not even the worst year for releases (I consider 2019 to be slightly worse despite having far more films released as the number of standouts last year were less and the big name releases were often re-releases of films already on Blu Ray... despite Scream Factory's editions being the ones to own). I remain disappointed that we are going to have to wait until May at the earliest to get our first potentially BIG announcement (UHD's don't do it for me and unless Event Horizon includes a new cut, that isn't going to do it for me either), but I do look forward to what the later half of 2021 offers and hope that as a result of these fewer releases that Fall 2021 brings us another much sought after Ultimate collection release from a particular Springwood slasher. ![]() |

![]() The highlight of the year for me were the Paramount titles, particularly Let's Scare Jessica and April Fool's Day. Disappointed that April Fool's didn't include any deleted footage but that stuff was likely thrown out, same as Event Horizon. The rest were either reissues or I had already imported foreign versions (Graveyard Shift) but I still double dipped. Titles like Ghost Ship were meh since they didn't need to be re-released. I grabbed all of the Corman reissues but they left me wanting more. It's like when studios release the first season of a beloved TV show and abandon the rest, except in this case I think those Corman reissues probably moved a LOT more copies than any of their IFC DTV stuff, none of which I own or am interested in. The Hammer and Golden Age films are not for me and those made up a BIG chunk of 2020's lineup. Finally, as cool as that Friday the 13th set was, it wasn't truly definitive since not all films received a new scan. I'm excited about UHD reissues but I'm looking forward to Arrow's plans more than Shout Factory's. Arrow does gorgeous in-house restorations where SF works with whatever they're handed. Plus I already own the Studiocanal Prince of Darkness UHD so I won't be triple dipping. Not interested in yet another edition of Army of Darkness. |

Merry Christmas, everyone!
P.S. Don't watch this movie to get into a joyful Christmas frame of mind... ![]() When Kay, played by Emily Mortimer, is informed by the police that her mother is missing, she and her college-age daughter, Sam, played by Bella Heathcote, drive to the family home in the countryside, where they discover an empty house and no clue regarding the disappearance of the elderly widow, save for random signs of the woman's worsening dementia, including Post-It Note reminders on household items. Days later, Edna, played by Robyn Nevin, suddenly reappears at her home, with no explanation for her daughter and granddaughter regarding her whereabouts. Kay's relief is soon overshadowed by the realization that something is horribly wrong with Edna. In the older woman's large house, with its drab hallways and mysterious locked rooms, a secret is waiting. The 2020 Australian horror feature, Relic, the directorial debut of Natalie Erika James, has elicited multiple comparisons to another creepy film on those shores, The Babadook (2014), because of the way that it blends ghastly haunted house imagery with heartbreaking real life drama concerning mental deterioration. Viewers who have had to watch a loved one succumb to Alzheimer's and senility, as this reviewer has, will find this dark tale to be particularly resonant in a way that conjures tears even when one is watching frightening events through covered eyes. The use of visual symbolism is this movie's most insidious asset. Camera shots of a backyard tennis court overrun with grass, for instance, are sad reminders of better health in days past before nature takes its indifferent toll. Relic may not deal in monsters or masked killers, but it does not need such things to unsettle us. The anticipatory grief of knowing what ultimately lurks in wait for everyone in reality is more than enough. I watched this movie last night, and it still resounds with me now, on Christmas Eve. Here's to watching lighter fare tonight as I get into the holiday spirit. This bare bones Scream Factory/IFC release gets the job done with regard to presenting an inherently dreary-looking film in high definition. |

That Friday the 13th boxset was enough to satisfy me with Shout! this year. I have the John Carpenter UHDs and Event Horizon on preorder. I hope for more great releases next year.

There was a brief time in 2019 when Scream Factory used different cases.
They were slightly more sturdy and thicker than the original Amaray Elite cases. Also the corners seemed a bit more rounded. I`ve also gotten these cases with some Kino Lorber releases. Does anyone know what the name of these cases is and where I can get some? Thanks! |
