Hello there Kuro owners. I noticed the Kuro 500M is going for about the same as the 5020. Is the 500M a better panel for the same price?

Two points for you to consider...
  • If you already have an audio setup the 500M is the way to go.
  • Also the 500M comes with additional picture adjustment issues that arent there on the 5020FD if I remember my Kuro facts.

PS Dont wait too long Krypton theyre running low on stocks everywhere from what I hear.

Thanks for your answer. What kind of issues does the 500M suffer from that the 5020FD does not?

Or did you mean that there are more options to adjust the picture with the 500M then there is on the 5020FD and not that there is an "issue" with it.

The only thing that has me worried right now is I've been reading everywhere that all kuro's "buzz" to some extent. I am very sensitive about buzz i can hear my DVR fan noise and i unplug it so that i could watch movies in complete silence. Also read about "Dirty screen effect" not sure if the 500/600M suffer from this problem.
Thanks.

Oops my bad..yes I meant it, the 500M, comes with more features/options for tweaking than the 5020FD. I have had/heard no buzzing on mine and so far, knock on wood, havent come across the dirty screen effect. If you are considering venturing to BestBuy for it, I would suggest you seriously consider going for it, you can always return/exchange it if the need were to arise. I'm gonna go out and say [and I saw this as a poll somewhere, praps @ avsforum] that over 70% [of those who took the poll] said they didnt have any issues with their Kuros.

Hey Wafi:

I recently purchased and installed ControlCAL...well worth it if you're looking for (3) great AV profiles. I'm finally getting very excited about my 111FD!

ISF-Night is very simialr to "Cinema" on my Panny 85U...except that it's a bit brighter (which I like).

Can't wait until this TV is closer to 1000 hours...I'm told it will look a lot better than it does now.

If you donate $35.00, you can get the AV "profile(s)" and the software for ControlCAL. For a $75.00 donation, they throw in a straight serial cable (that you need to connect a PC/laptop to the "Service Only" connector on your TV). You also get a USB/serial adapter and drivers, if your computer has NO serial port.

http://www.controlcal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=173

There are Profile calibration settings on the AVS forum that you can plug into the software and use to adjust each profile.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1034208

Even if you spend the $75.00 for the cable and adapter, it is certainly worth it for the payback in PQ.

Hey Rich,

How tech savvy does one need to be to be able to use ControlCal?

Not very tech savvy...just need access to a laptop or PC and the cable (adapter if you need it) and the software and "profiles". As long as you follow the instructions thoroughly and completely, it's not so hard. Even if you run into any problems (I did my first night of trying it), Turbe (the developer of the software and a moderator on the calibration forum) is there to answer any and all questions that you might have.

Follow those links that I listed above and read some of the posts. You can either post questions for Turbe on the forum and/or PM him if you wish. He's a really nice guy! I'll answer as many of your questions as I can as well.

Tell him that rkish sent you!

Let me know what you decide to do.

I was in Best Buy today and here are their current sale prices. The PRO-141FD was marketed down from $6,999.99 to $5,999.99 ($399.99 for table top stand). The PRO-151FD was marked down from $6,499.99 to $5,499.99. The PRO-111FD was on sale for $2,999. Many Best Buy's are out of stock on the PDP-5020FD. The PDP-5020FD is still $1,999.99 if you can find it in stock. The PDP-5020FD floor models and open boxes sell for $1,749.99 at Best Buy.

Tried these at another forum to deafening silence so...

1. Display info, screen size (full, wide, etc.) in bottom right corner of screen is sometimes green text rather then white. Can't figure out what that's about.

2. My HMG menu, and all of it's sub-menus, are dimmer than all other menus (text looks gray rather than white). Is that normal?

3. Do you think this tv speaker could work as a center? My reciever is a Sony 3300 ES. I'm thinking the speaker is probably too wimpy but was wondering if anyone has tried it.

It would all depend on the power that it can handle, and the ohm rating of the speaker - I don't use it, and rewired it to my 17" Sanyo in my room (taking that TV apart just to get the speaker wire to the outside was fun!)

But I'd find out the specs first. I think that its impedance would be too low, as well as the power it could handle, to effectively work as a home theater speaker.

On mine AUTO is always green, the rest [FULL, DOT..] is white. Does it really matter what color it is?

Hard to say since I don't have a clue what it indicates. I imagine it's no big deal but I'm a curious guy.

Manual is pretty low on info but I'm pretty sure it says that the speaks are 8 ohm.

Oh I was a little bothered by the green/white as well and then just told myself to forget about it.

Especially if you own the Elites. Once you activate those amazing ISFccc modes there is no turning back. From a purist standpoint, there is simply no other A/V mode on the Elites that would out perform them, including Pure mode, PERIOD. Especially post calibration, which if you own an Elite, I highly recommend you get done at some point, otherwise, IMHO, why by an Elite if your not going to extract its full potential.

I'd do it in a heartbeat if I wasnt scared of turning my Kuro into a brick by doing something incorrectly.
