It's definitely a very interesting take on Dracula. Visually stunning and almost like a fantasy popup book come to life. There are genuine moments of pure creepiness. Hopkins and Oldman chew up the scenery and their scenes are the very best parts of the film. Don't mind Keanu... he's just... well... Keanu and only a minor part of the proceedings. Sadie Frost is truly sumptuous in the role of Lucy. She acts better than Winona here and probably should have been the lead actress, though she was not a big star at the time.

Aside from the wonky accent, Keanu actually does a great job of portraying Harker exactly as intended - a ridiculously stiff, naive young man with the emotional range of a bowling ball.

So I finally watched this last night and I seem to remember that previous versions had English translations, specifically in the opening scene. This one did not, unless subtitles are turned on. Am I remembering it correctly?
![]() My apologies if this was asked before but I did a quick search and found nothing. Last edited by js666; 11-25-2020 at 10:59 AM. |

It's a little annoying that they're player-generated, as the original film used a specific font and color to mesh with the overall look, but you shouldn't have to turn anything on. |

So... I just acquired this disc and remembered this conversation about the subtitle issues when I didn't see them in the prologue. I turned on the player subtitles and then I had subtitles for everything- even where they shouldn't be. There are two English options and both of them played subtitles over everything. What gives? Anybody else experience this? I was happy with the blu, but this is a favorite so it was nice to see it in a more vivid form, but this issue is a dealbreaker if there's no workaround.
Edit: Close Encounters is also missing the original burnt-in subtitles, but the player generates them without issue. But speaking of subtitles, if The Godfather movies see the light of day in the next year, I'm a little hesitant if this is gonna be an ongoing issue with the format. I know they're two different studios, but... Last edited by happydood; 01-23-2021 at 04:59 PM. |

It's a shame, perhaps the added cost of doing separate encodes/authoring for international editions is a reason.
As for The Godfather it will likely not have burned-in subtitles because they went back to the original negatives for many of those sections for the 4K restoration, however the subtitles on the Blu-ray were styled so hopefully they'll do the same for the UHD release. If they were anything like the theatrical subtitles I don't know, but at least they look better than the usual generic ones. |
