Would love to see them do another Kurosawa box set either in Blu-ray form or 4K if they decide to make them their first 4K discs. Seven Samurai could use an update since it's restored in 4K now.

I think everyone and their grandmothers are hoping for more Kurosawa as I don't think we have gotten a Kurosawa Blu-ray since 2016? That's a long time for sure. Something has to be brewing I would imagine.

I have to imagine it would be their best selling box set of the Blu-ray era should they release it.

He represents the combination of broad appeal and art house sentiment that the brand can take advantage of most. Fellini, for all the fun he can be to his fans, is never going to get the same sort of broad appeal, and that seems to have sold really well anyway.

And dammit, I want Red Beard in high definition.

Yeah there are a ton of titles that need to be upgraded to hi-def. If I was a betting man, I would say it's happening. However, who knows when it will be out. I wouldn't be surprised if they are trying to GET all his titles and many need work. It's probably going to be a massive project. Hopefully 2021 is the year, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't.

Question:

I remember Criterion's 'M' was one of the early titles from them that had DISC ROT.

Is there a way to find out on back of case to see if you got the .. second pressing?

No, because the issue wasn't something like Dressed to Kill's incorrect aspect ratio, the disc rot titles didn't get a "second printing," so nothing was changed on the packaging.

A clue for their 2021 plans might have been nice.

Yeah, I would have loved a 2021 hint. The artist who normally does the art passed away from cancer, so they either stopped the tradition with him, or just didn't really care enough to do any hints. Either way, I would love for the hints to come back.

Most likely. The problem discs were from one plant, and I think they were using more than one at that time, so even if you pick one up that has been on the shelf since it was released you might get a good disc. The only way to tell is open it and look at the code on the disc's inner ring.

On the same note of Criterion disc damage, My copy of White Material froze going into the 3rd act. I was able to duplicate the error on a 2nd blu ray player.

orders@criterion.com got back quickly and said "We've had a handful of reports in recent years about a playback error on the WHITE MATERIAL Blu-Ray around the 1:17:00 mark"

They'll be replacing the disc 4-6 weeks.

TSPDT's 2021 1,000 Greatest Films List has been posted. They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? (TSPDT) is a modest but growing film resource dedicated to the art of motion picture filmmaking and most specifically to that one particular individual calling the shots from behind the camera - the film director. Amongst other content, TSPDT currently houses two of the most referenced film lists on the internet (The 1,000 Greatest Films and The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films) along with a growing set of director profiles.

The site is run by Bill Georgaris, who uses an amalgam of top ten lists to come up with the annual rankings.

Great site. They also host the They Shoot Dark Pictures, Don’t They? list, highlighting the most referenced noir films. It’s a list I refer to often when making purchasing decisions regarding some lesser known films.

Yea, I pour over both lists quite a bit. I am using his compilation of the 100 most cited Film Noir as the backbone of my own Noir collection. Not all are available on blu ray, but I'm trying to get as many as possible. Plus, many more based on his recommendations. Fun stuff!!

I wonder if Criterion was/is interested in Aronofsky's The Fountain? I know he touted wanting to do a new cut of the film and get a better transfer of the film out again but on Criterion. Even recorded a commentary for it.

It also handles the text of "Othello" incredibly well on top of that, making it quite tense to modern audiences. Can't recommend it enough if you haven't seen it.
Here we go again. You know, MJA, I'm not sure I have ever seen a post by you that I haven't agreed with or not liked. It's gotten to be so bad I'm sure there are people out there who think we are either one and the same person or I am your butler.

In any case, you once again said it all for me in your review of OTHELLO. I managed to see it on the theatrical release in the 1990's and I remember being so blown away by it, when I was walking home from the theater in Hollywood I actually started off in the wrong direction, my mind was so preoccupied with Welles' visions. I not only think it the best version of OTHELLO I've ever seen (including seeing Placido Domingo live in OTELLO), but arguably my favorite Shakespeare film adaptation of all time. Welles just never ever fails to shock and awe me.

Meanwhile, should I put out your smoking jacket and slippers for later, sir?

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but Persona is getting a re-release on March 30th. This is another previous Dual-Format title that is now getting the single BD treatment.

Which I assume is meaningless unless you care about the DVD, right? Nothing changes except the removal of that disc?
