True, that’s basically what I deduced as well. But it would have been nice to know that Tauriel is no longer banished from the Woodland Realm. Thranduil reaching out his hand would have accomplished that by letting her know that she’s welcome back home to begin with.

Saw the theatricals at the cinema and then the blu-ray theatricals at home. Thought they were acceptable entertainment, not to bad, but not good enough to revisit them once more. Changed my mind and did take the time to see the extended ones i UHD. Now i rate them highly, not on LOTR level but among the best fantasy films out there. A couple of short moments I was taken out of the viewing experience due to over-processed shots (EE?) otherwise I was fully involved and engaged in the movies. I guess the combination of extended cuts and HDR did the trick. Happy about them. I have noticed some heavy flak about the transfers in this thread but to me engagement is the thing :-). OLED 65" from 7-8 feet away.

FWIW: This is $79.96 on Amazon.

If you price-match at Target and use the 20% Circle discount, it'll come to under $58 + tax.

Good question.

Personally I’m gonna stick with the extended Hobbit Blu-rays with the 3D discs I’ve got for all 3 films for the time being. There’s still a bit of DNR on them. But they’re good enough for me.

I bought the LoTR trilogy on 4k and even though I liked them because of the HDR, if the EE,DNR and Sharpening are anything to go by on them I’m not too keen on getting The Hobbitses as I think the Blu rays are good enough for me. That will free up £80.00 for other releases I want.

Not sure what happens to Tauriel, not sure it really matter either.

I agree - although Im not sure the extended editions are really that much better. There are bits and pieces that are nice additions but you could get most of the gist of things with just the TE's.

The key with these films is that you have to NOT expect LOTR quality because you wont get it. There is a lot of wasted time, some bloat and honestly the dwarves are mostly extremely annoying & unnecessary sans Thorin and a few select others. But I do love anything that is tied to LOTR meaning some of the Dwarf plot, the meeting of Elron, Galadriel, Gandalf, Saruman, the mystery of the buried with king at Dolgudor, the darkness looking, the elf/dwarf conflict, etc. Azog is a great character too.

The tacked on Love story and Legolas' usage in general is bad though. Just bad. Alfrid sucks. Many of the battle scenes have no real tension and are just a mess.

But Im glad I have them in 4K and they are a decent watch heading into LOTR.

Short version: hoo boy it's been sharpened to hell and back, and yet I still enjoyed it in spite of that.

Having watched the whole 4k saga I can say LOTR feels much more connected to The Hobbit trilogy now just from the colour correction. They no longer felt like two separate things for me this go around.

I've always felt like they were connected visually but yes, watching the UHDs they have more of a flow now.

I borrowed my friend's 4K Hobbit set and have been watching these movies the last couple of weeks. They are much more enjoyable than I remember them. I do have some issues with the abundance of "high fantasy" in AUJ right around when the Storm Giants scene happens. At some point there is just too much (CGI + high fantasy scenes). But on the whole these movies are really good! It just takes a slightly different mindset.

Eh, it's a question i've struggled with myself. I bought the Hobbit trilogy on blu-ray at Christmas for £15 and I thought they looked fantastic in 1080p, so i'm thinking that'll be it for me. What i've seen of the UHDs hasn't exactly floated ma' boat. Having said that, i'm sure it'll reach a price where i'll say "F*** it, i've gotta check these things out" - but 42 isn't it

Got to suspect at some point the studios are going to cut back on the European language sets. Anything with non-English packaging seem to be getting routinely severely discounted.

I’m currently in the middle of watching the Hobbit trilogy in 2d Blu-ray from my 3D sets. I’m like you, I’m very tempted/struggling with it myself. But I’m not sure I want to spend £42 when I’m very happy with the Blu rays aswell when there’s other stuff I’d like to buy. Decisions, decisions! If only I was stinking rich, Lol.

Folks - I just watched the entire 4K trilogy but this time I did the EE's. Whats everyones take on these versions? I *think* Desolation is the best of the three extended versions with Journey being the least necessary. Armies is take it or leave it with just the funeral scene being great. So for me, I will probably watch this way from now on:

Unexpected Journey - TE
Desolation of Smaug - EE
Battle of the Five Armies - TE

What say you?
