I'd be surprised if they devoted a whole second disc to an SD presentation of the TV cut. Obviously anything's possible until we know for sure, but if it were just a capture of an old tape copy they could easily fit that onto one disc with the theatrical cut.

I also doubt it was created on SD video. You had TV shows shot and finished on film at least well into the '80s, just off the top of my head, and probably later. I'd be surprised if they assembled this extended cut on video in 1978.

I think "The Thing"'s TV version had the same issue with them messing up the framerate. (As did all the extras on Mad Max that were carried over from DVD.) I hope they've fixed that over the last couple years, but I think I heard they just recently released something that had the same kind of error (converted 1080i50hz to 1080p), so maybe they will never learn.

It's interesting and fun to have those edits in SD, but man, their encoding errors with AoD made it nearly unwatchable.
Didn't even think of that! Thanks for reminding me. Let's hope not that's not the case.

You are probably right about having been edited on video. However, I bet the first disc will just be the HD theatrical feature and commentary (if any) and the second disc will be the SD extended cut along with a good handful of new bonus features.

The extended cut is basically a work print of the film. I don’t know if it required any post production work after NBC got the broadcast rights. Also I’m not sure if more was added to pad the run into its 5-hr broadcast slot with commercials.

I hope we get a HD scan in widescreen at minimum. The few minutes of deleted scenes that were in the Studio Canal release were in widescreen.

If they actually went through the trouble of scanning the TV cut in HD, I'll be bowing down to them, but something tells me it will probably be VHS-quality SD.

Yeah, while i'm super excited for this, I'm a bit confused why big releases like this and Event Horizon aren't also released on UHD.

We still don't even know if it's even a new transfer, let alone a 4K one.

I will take the extended cut in any form. It was crappy quality when I first saw it. It will be nostalgic. I hope it is a new scan, though.

UHDs are more expensive to produce. It's unrealistic to expect everything to have a UHD counterpart. Maybe in a few years if physical media doesn't decline further, there will be more BD/UHD combo packs.

The only thing I have against Mr. Jackson's Kong is that awful stampede scene. And I have a fear of heights, so the end of the film actually terrifies me. But, I love how Andy Serkis embodied the big gorilla (and finally had an onscreen role).

But, as I said, I saw this as I was hitting puberty and I fell in love with Jessica. So, rose-colored glasses and all, this remains my favorite version of Kong to date.

Also, that snake scene is awesome. Also, also I too seem to remember Kong grabbing that girl out of the train, realizing it's not her and splatting her against a building.

Because as has been said before not everything will get an UHD release & honestly not everything needs one. Also UHD sell less then BDs & DVDs still outsell both.

I had huge issues with how unbearably long the opening of the movie was. But, my biggest issue was the "BIGGER IS ALWAYS BETTER" approach to the action scenes. I thought the kong vs rex scene was terrible thanks to it being like "hey, it was cool when kong fought a t-rex, HOW ABOUT HE FIGHTS MORE THAN ONE?!?!" The lower key stuff, like everything with Naomi Watts and kong interacting, is where the version shines. Everything else has big issues. Again, though, this is based on my memories of the theatrical version. I'm guessing the extended one is even worse, and I'm not sure if it would be as good on a TV vs the theater.

Kong splatting a girl in the 76 one sounds like a good candidate for something your young mind might have filled in. I remember lots of old gory scenes as being far more gory than they actually were, and I know a ton of people do that. The textbook example tends to be the ear scene in Reservoir Dogs. It seems like tons of people remember seeing the ear actually come off, but the shot never existed. Same deal with the knife actually stabbing the body in Psycho. If it did, though, hoo-boy. I can't imagine that considering the tone of the rest of the movie. I can't wait to see it.

Awesome! I thought that - at only 500 posters - they would be all claimed by now.

If they sell out fast and the demand is huge they will usually up the poster count. But they would usually say that too.

Yeah, the blue screen seams do show too much in the stampede scene. And I also agree about the ending. I remember getting major vertigo as I watched it on the huge theater screen. It felt like I was on the building ledge.

That or just another Mandela effect. Some examples of the Mandela effect are interesting but the one example that piqued my interest and made me lean forward in my chair when I read it was Jaws in Moonraker. I had that on VHS and distinctly remember - when meeting his girlfriend for the first time - his girl smiling and having braces. I thought that was what won his heart, having the same metal smile.
