Don't get me wrong it's still watchable enough, it's just for a film this beautiful it could look so much better,

Giant has what are called Mackie Lines in some scenes:

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...=29495&i=5&l=1

It looks like the same thing In Days of Heaven. If it were edge enhancement, I would think the power lines would also have halos in that screen cap. I don't know enough about video to be certain, but I guess it could be edge enhancement compounding it in the DVD caps.

Criterion uses different transfers for their European releases?

No, other companies have released better versions. The UK Criterion release of Solaris uses the same transfer as the US version but the French one (TF1 I think?) uses a 4K remaster.

Of course it's possible that it's EE in the transfer but if it's only when objects are against the sky it might be worth considering.

This is neither chromatic aberration which would be a fault during photography, nor Mackie Lines which would be introduced during processing.

The halos in Days of Heaven's Blu-ray release don't have the color fringing associated with chromatic aberration, and the scenes that contain the haloing aren't opticals unlike Giant. The whole film has an artificial appearance exhibiting signs of sharpening and EE, so it's pretty much an open-and-shut case.

Yeah, after going back to Giant and having a look, they don't look quite like that, and stocks and processes are separated by a couple decades.

It's too bad Ron Smith didn't get to this and Chinatown while he was still with Paramount...

Linda Manz has passed away aged 58. I imagine there will be more in the media about this soon: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Manz

So sorry to hear that, one of the greatest naturalistic performances in the history of the cinema.

Very sad to hear about Linda Manz (just saw that she had passed). She obviously had a tough life.

Being a huge movie fan, I remember seeing her in Malick's superb period piece Days of Heaven & the disturbing Hopper-directed Out of the Blue - both back in the 200X's. Her narration/voice-over in DOH was somewhat ethereal, and really added to the power of the film.

She definitely had a very interesting & unique appearance/demeanor in these films, and I always wanted to see more of her. Unfortunately, she was only in a handful of movies & semi-retired (from the movie business, at least) in the '80's.

Much later, she did have a small cameo role in the very underrated David Fincher thriller The Game, as well as a larger role in the very unsettling indy film Gummo (both were released in 1997).

Here's an interesting 2011 article on Manz:

On the contrary. She wasn't that interested in a movie career - it was her mother that pushed her into the industry. Linda went on to marry a camera operator, they had two or three children and then some grandchildren.

By all accounts she was very happy, a life full of her loving family and friends and had zero regrets about her stint in Hollywood. Huge tragedy that she passed away at just 58.

Did Criterion lose the rights to this?

Seems to be a pre-order on Target's website along with a bunch of other Paramount titles. Not yet dated but Rosemary's Baby is also among them.

Nope, Paramount is just releasing their own cheap catalog editions of those titles. Just like Universal did with The Game and Charade, and many other studios have done. When Criterion licenses a title from a studio, it rarely seems to be an exclusive license.

This could really use a 4K remaster, could it make the Paramount Presents line..?

Paramount realizing... "Nah...anyone who really wants Days or Rosemary's will get the Criterions."

I am really puzzled by this release. How is it going to be profitable? Who do they think the audience is for this? Those who are still interested in physical media and are familiar with this film very likely already own the Criterion version. Are there really that many holdouts waiting to save $5?
