Just watched this and here's my quick frank take:

My god, I went in with low expectations and I was still disappointed in this. This was so much worse than I could have imagined. I'm actually shocked how much this film sucked. I actually think this is the worst of all three Legendary Godzilla movies. Kong: Skull Island is the only film in this series worth a damn now. The movie Rampage was better than this shit. This is like Michael Bay Transformers sequel level bad. The story is a bunch of non-sense, a ridiculous plot, rushed exposition, crappy dialogue, and characters that are even more annoying than the previous three films. The CGI isn't bad, and the monster fights were okay, but for the most part, they just seemed like there was no weight to them. I'll take the silly rubber suit era of the classic Toho Godzilla films any day over this -- at least those films had a charm about them. And that's not just nostalgia talking. Nothing here elevates the kaiju genre for me. This may have been a modern update for today's audiences, but it's certainly not better. This is just big budget Hollywood crap.

I'll give it two stars, and that's being generous.

I don't want to jinx it (knocks on desk) but it's at a rock solid 81% RT, fairing way better than many thought! Looking forward to more positive posts (which seem to be in the majority here too) from the lucky ones...

Every review I seem to read trashes it. And yet it is at 80%. How?

I'm sure there's plenty of variables you can apply here, but this still feels like a

I think it was pretty clear who won. Anyone who saw the movie would probably give the same answer.

Loved the action and was happy to finally see the monsters fighting in the day. Didn't like the hollow earth silliness, but so happy the runtime was reduced to focus on the monsters.

I think this is the movie that should have started it all, IMO if they led off with this it could have been a $1B movie worldwide. The audience has to eat this up, this was summer blockbuster fun. Pretty damn awesome.

I was compiling a mental list of gripes but when we got to
[Show spoiler]Hollow Earth
I was like f*** it, just roll with it.

It's really good guys. There's a really closeup shot of Godzilla's face and he looked real, like a legit real life living creature...I was blown away.

I really have no complaints, the movie knocked my socks off.
I'm glad you and I can agree one Godzilla film for once!

I despise King Kong but he grew on me in this movie. I'm still #TeamGodzilla all the way but Kong isn't so bad after all.

I enjoyed it quite a bit but I don't think it really delved into Godzilla or Kong. Felt like the film was basically just there as a vehicle to watch large monsters wail on each other.

My buddy and I watched all 28 TOHO Godzilla movies over the last month or so to get hyped for this. I'd say we are huge Godzilla fans old and new. We knew exactly what we wanted from this and still got more than we expected. Great fights, great pacing, decent story to move things along, and the human B plots were simple. I liked how both B plots merged at the end to set up one epic battle. Just a fun movie all around. Wish I could have gone to the theater but my set up still felt epic though. Not sure what some might have wanted for this movie that didn't like it but guess these just aren't for you.

Go team Godzilla

I'm at the movies right now, and the line to get popcorn is ridiculous. I'm probably going to miss the first ten or fifteen minutes of the movie. Good thing it's also on HBO Max.

That's exactly what it was meant to be 100%. Not sure how you expected anything different

I didn't lol, pretty much everything else got pushed aside to maximize the fight scenes.

Sounds like a Kaiju movie done right to me. It's what fans have been asking for and it delivered. Plus finally fights in the daylight. Thank god.

It's always the indecisive families who hold up the line.

Getting a popcorn and paying with a debit card should take 45 seconds.

4/5. So obviously I loved it, I’m watching it for my third time today as we speak.

However, after the first viewing, it left me feeling exactly like I did when I walked out of my first showing Godzilla: King of the Monsters, just whelmed. It gave me everything I wanted on paper, but yet, it felt like it could have been so much more. The film itself is very much a Kong sequel with a Godzilla side quest lingering over the film.

In all honesty, they should have given Kong a separate sequel film that expanded on why he’s overgrown the island, the return to Hollow Earth, and then set up GvK in the ending.

Anyways, the fights were bonkers. The final throwdown was so epic. As expected the humans are the worst part, except Jia. Yet another reason why I would’ve preferred a Kong sequel. Their bond was special and the little girl playing her was so good.

I hope they find a way to continue with the Monsterverse but if not, it was a good conclusion.

Rankings:
Godzilla 2014
Kong: Skull Island
Godzilla vs Kong
Godzilla: King of the Monsters

80% of Hong Kong has to be dead after that fight, right?

Wooooo. The action in the third act certainly did not disappoint.

This is a film that you really need to experience on the big screen. So I'm hoping that I can see it next month when my regal reopens.
