Probably. They started the evacuation way too late (AKA the only reason Lance Reddick was in the movie), and you still see people running around during the actual fights... Quote:

Watched it the night it dropped, and I liked it, but...
[Show spoiler] I loved the Kong centered plot, as much as I love Godzilla. Kong finding his origins/finding a new home was a treat to watch. |

Wife & I were very excited for this. Watched at home last night on a 65" OLED. Some quick takes after first viewing:
- Had some decent moments, overall, but, I think we both much preferred the Toho monsters from KoTM. - The humans in KoTM were at least unbearable but funny in a porn acting kind of way - There are way too many human characters in GvK, and we found most the dialogue not even ironically funny this time. - Brian Tyree Henry had some funny lines, though - The actual fights were , ALMOST rendering all of my other impressions moot, but, not quite For context, we're both big fans of these movies, but, not necessarily neck-deep in the lore & not as well-versed on the Toho movies as many in this thread are. Fights were bonkers fun. Will watch again. |

Well, the Showa set from Criterion would be a good start. That's 15 movies there. The set's fault is Toho cuz.. they're Toho. This is in reference to the visuals in giving out old remasters instead of allowing the sources to be newly remastered. Return of Godzilla (1984) may be OOP but I see it on Amazon via sellers a lot. Godzilla vs. Biollante is OOP for sure. Good luck finding a good price here. The rest of the Heisei era (G vs, KG, G vs. M, G vs. MG, G vs. SG, and G vs. D) is out by Sony. The PQ is ok. I remember there to be DUBTITLES but maybe I'm remembering the DVDs. But I think we got the same issue w/ the BDs. This also affects the Millennium series. Also by Sony. Godzilla (1998) is on UHD now. Shin Godzila via Funimation is on BD. And the Legendary G films are on UHD too. Aside from from the current G vs. K, obviously. The first Netflix G film is on BD in Japan. Not sure about the latter 2 of the trilogy. Don't think we'll get those on BD here in the states. |

I feel like Kong: Skull Island had by far the best humans in the Monsterverse, by no means amazing, but at least had stories which held your attention and John C. Reilly had a heartwarming arc. Still while I was bored with the human stuff again in this, I do think it had the best monster action in the universe.

This one felt like they were earnestly trying to be funny in places, and, aside from a few lines, it really fell flat. Again, look, I'm talking about the human characters in a Kaiju movie, so, please take my critique in proportion, but, they really didn't work for me in this one. I also thought they did a more coherent job tracking the titans in KotM. Last edited by oneway23; 04-01-2021 at 01:59 PM. |

As a lifelong Godzilla fan that was bitterly disappointed by the miserable, blue, rainy slog that was Godzilla: KOTM, this was a hugely pleasant surprise. I loved it, and never got bored at all. The characters from KOTM are still horrible here, especially Millie Bobbie Brown, but fortunately there's almost nothing from Kyle Chandler this go-around. The new adult characters aren't great, but they're never annoying (besides maybe the conspiracy theory guy that hangs out with MBB). The Kong kid is actually great and adorable and their relationship worked a hell of a lot better than Brie Larson and Kong. Like, this movie really bothers to make Kong its emotional core, and it works almost as well as his relationship with Naomi Watts in the '05 one! I think even Kong fans that didn't like Skull Island should give this a chance, cause he really gets his due here.
Additionally, this movie makes the wise choice to play almost everything sincerely, and just pitch the dialogue at a level where it's kind of funny just because of what it is (discussion about the hollow earth, etc). It is much more reminiscent of the classic Godzilla movies, and vastly more enjoyable than things like the horrific attempts at humor from Bradley Whitmore in the last movie. The bad guy's big speech about his evil plans is the highlight of this approach. I was really glad I never watched any trailers and somehow avoided being aware of the surprise of the big mid-movie reveal. I also really enjoyed the plot threads that were references to older films in their weirdness (ex [Show spoiler] . And the monster action is GREAT, like by far some of the best big CGI action setpieces I've ever seen. The fight on the water and the big climax are just non-stop awesome. I loved it. And one's in daylight, and the other has even more neon lighting than Pacific Rim! It's great stuff. I'd highly recommend it even to people who loathed the previous movies in the franchise. I personally didn't remember much of anything about the plots of Kong: Skull Island or Godzilla: King of the Monsters and it didn't matter one bit. |

No kidding, right?? The ecoterrorist who buys one of King Ghidorah's heads in the post-credits stinger just up and left town?
Also, my wife is asking what happened to what she thought was a Mothra egg tease in the news reports at the end of KotM? |

While that's quite terrible, with two huge beasts duking it out there is always going to be collateral damage. If you haven't already, watch Shin Godzilla. He annihilates more than most past Godzilla films.

Glad somebody brought this up because I was just about ask about that guy. I kept half expecting him to show up at some point when the trio was exploring the Apex headquarters and we'd see the finished endgame of that leftover Ghidorah head. Thought maybe I missed something but I guess not.

Flipped it like a hot PS5, apparently.

![]() Certainly not obligated to have any of the Titans in any of these movies, of course, but, haven't there been indications that this may (calm down, I said may) be the last one? |

I enjoyed this quite a bit but never fully vibed with it, and I'm guessing that - although the stream looked really good - a nice IMAX screening would've ultimately put this over the edge.
I'm glad they stuck to their guns with the dumb, bombastic action that I appreciate about KotM, and although I'd probably prefer GvK due to improved fights and pacing I'm frankly surprised I didn't come out feeling that this movie wiped the floor with that one. I do think that the characters from KotM should've been utilized in a way that actually makes sense or else just jettisoned entirely because the podcast subplot really, really brought this one down for me and is right near the bottom of human subplots in this universe. Give me Brian Tyree Henry in anything but I actually laughed more at Bradley Whitford's lines in KotM (although I'm an audience of 1 who enjoyed whatever he's doing in that movie)... Also, the immediate set-ups for the action were contrived as all hell ( [Show spoiler] but like most everything in the movie it's all to get to that sweet, sweet action that definitely is creative and exciting. Probably the best in the series in that regard.
