The last time the Oscars Best Picture got me/I agreed with, was last year with Parasite. I can try to be contrarian with that but I just can't...it's so damn good. |

There's nothing "intellectual" about liking some obscure or indipendent director and acting like that's art and mainstream directors are "overrated" or "for teenegers". That's just being arrogant (if you bash em) and having different taste. You like what you like. But if you don't like something then the better thing to do is to just have some constructive criticism. Like, I have seen many valid complaints on Benjamin Button and TDKR (Nolan's and Fincher's most criticized films in the internet)... yet, I love both films still. |

Violent bias incoming: The Fifth Element is my favorite movie of all time.
But it also happens to have the greatest trailer ever made, which, to my knowledge, has only ever been included on overseas Blu-rays and the original DVD for The Professional stateside. That is a crime against humanity. Here it is, remastered by a fan, with a few alterations made in order for the HD copy of the film to be used: |

UMO: The Fifth Element is one of the worst films I've ever taken the time see. And I've seen it at least twice that I can recall. Fool me twice, and all that, etc.

I had high hopes for Valerian. The source material is excellent and Besson seemed exceptionally well suited for its visuals. Unfortunately, it was absolutely ruined for me by the incredible miscasting of the two main characters. What a waste.

The last time I agreed with the Academy on Best Picture was 2007, when "No Country for Old Men" won. That's the last time I agreed with them on Best Director, as well.
In fact, since the mid-80s, I've only agreed with their Best Picture choice six times. Six times since like 1984. 36 Oscar seasons ago. I've agreed with Best Director only 8 times. (Two extra times, where Picture and Director split, and I agreed with the Director winner, but not the Picture winner). I had a much better record with them in the 70s , but not always matching up. But this past decade is the first time I hadn't a single time that I agreed with Picture or Director. And it's not extremes here, I'm not saying the Picture and Director winners they choose usually are terrible, they are usually good films. They're just not what my choice is personally, in that given year, for what is actually best. |

Certainly very underrated relative to it anyway, Walken and Rockwell are both superb in it.

By comparison they've mostly tended to ignore the whole art-house/indie scene over the last 25 years. Last edited by moreorless; 04-06-2021 at 04:25 PM. |
