There is no announcement from Funai. However, I've been told one is coming.

But, I wouldn't expect anything until closer to US Thanksgiving. My guess is(this is only a guess) the cheaper BD players will arrive in time for Black Friday and be the low cost players through the Xmas season.

this is the danger poiint for BD, it doesnt matter how good the release schedule is for BD, there will still be people who go buy this type of tat as they are on limited income, it may be pants, but it will sell. the cashpot bonus to paramount was connected to this announcement, its time for the BDA to start pulling counter-rabbits out of its collective hat.

But would they buy something without looking at the price of the software?

Let's face it, those 95% are going to barf at the prices we consider a bargain.

Hahahaha 1080i.

No dates set. No Price set. Yawn. Wake me up when it's reality. Just a fluff PR saying before the Holidays. At least it has an HDMI connection

Dolby TrueHD rounds out the high definition experience by presenting the HD DVD disc soundtrack as it was meant to be heard, virtually equal to the studio master.
Presumably that means the vast majority of HD DVD are not presenting the soundtrack as it was meant to be heard?

Glad someone admitted that.

Please....How the hell is this going to off....The poeple that buy electronics from walmart aren't the most sound income people. I bet 97% of those poeple don't even have a hdtv let alone hdmi inputs (I only saw hdmi output on that press). So.....some dumbass is going to buy this player and think it will work with their tv and find out it doesn't and either:
A) Have to fork out over 1k for a new tv that will support it.
or
B) Not even be able to watch a HD movie on their tv.

Plus, I bet there is a blu-ray player out by then that is 250 and can do true HD (1080p)

With Toshiba's HD-A2 retailing at under $250, and the Xbox 360 Add-on at under $179, it's a good bet that the Venturer player might break below the $150 mark.
I don't quite follow that logic. Shouldn't it be between the Toshiba and just a drive?

It's a good bet to kill the sales of the add-on once and for all?

See there you have me confused. HD-DVD is all about wanting competition and with Microsoft as a huge backer, how can we doubt it?

*sarcasm off*

I agree completely in what you've stated. There is close zero competition in HD-DVD.

Good point. And I wonder if the five HD-DVD (or BD for that matter) will apply to the $199.99 player.

To be fair, the press release does say:

the SHD7000 is designed to be compatible with the vast majority of HDTVs already in North American consumers' homes.

i.e. they are not trying to sell to people without HDTVs. You're raising a doubt whether much of the target market is shopping at Wal-Mart ... good question. But even if they aren't, maybe the low price would be enough to draw a few of them in.

Yeah, in that case the discounts start to get ridiculous. After a point you are departing even from the games console business model. Not only do you take a big hit on the hardware in return for a chunk of the software sales, you even accept a hit on the software too.

do you think this player will affect the funais prices? lets say this player is 199.99 and funais were supposed to retail for 299.99- does sony eat the hundred dollars, or do they not play the price war- being that the funai will be 1080p and venturer is 1080i. Does the venturer even have component video out?

If you look at their site they have a DVD player with component out.

This will surely retail for less than $199... I would imagine $150 to start or lower.

Hopefully Blu Ray is prepared for this and there is something waiting in the wings. Things are only going to get more competitive price wise.
