I really wish James Cameron takes a break from Avatar and supervises 4K remastering of his films. We fans can assure that we won't disturb you until you release Avatar Season 29 Episode 1138.

So I guess every filmmaker wanting to alter their films needs to consult you before doing so, so that you can deem it worthy or not?

I don't think those stunt double face shots are quite as visible in the original theatrical color timing. True Lies was originally that darker blue that T2 used to be. But I could be wrong.

Lies was dark in 35mm (most 90s prints have a lot of black crush), I have seen it a few times but I saw wiggy clear as day even in the cinema day one

It's true. I actually do remember the doubling being obvious at the cinema. The snow chase and the horse chase were/are the most obvious scenes.

It's kind of like the classic James Bond films, though. The doubles were often noticeable, but the dangerous stunts (the prologue before the title sequence being the highlight event normally) were the point, not that it looked like the actor was doing them or not. Audiences weren't that shook up back then as they are now.

Nothing really new or mind blowing, but a solid read:

This part from that oral history kills me:

"Cameron: I remember sitting there once, high on E, writing notes for Terminator, and I was struck by Sting’s song, that “I hope the Russians love their children too.” And I thought, “You know what? The idea of a nuclear war is just so antithetical to life itself.” That’s where the kid came from."

Now I can't get the image of James Cameron dancing around wildly with glow sticks at a rave out of my head.

Chris

It's just a small scene that lasts for 2 seconds. Unnoticeable. The stunt work for T2 is very "hideous", well covered.

It's odd but in the many times I watched it I've never noticed his double. If it ever comes to 4K I'll probably see it.

But most dangerous stunts were, by definition, filmed from a distance and/or from angles where you can’t see their face (like the shot behind Bond as he leaps off the dam in GoldenEye, which then cuts to - you’ve guessed it - a VERY long distance away) so you just have to get someone who vaguely resembles the actor. But Cameron got the cameras right in there on True Lies and fookin hell, it’s always been a shambles in those scenes. The guy in the snow just doesn’t look anything like Arnold, and the hilarious thing about the horse rider later on in the movie is that he looks more like a beefy Robert Patrick than Arnie. Wrong film Jimbo!

Yesh, obvious stunt people are obvious throughout film history but most of the time they get away with it or at least try to cut around it, True Lies however feels like an old episode of Star Trek at times, i.e. when Kirk would start fighting someone and it cuts to the wide shot it’s so blatantly not Shatner any more, which was visible to me even on an old 14” TV like 30 years ago. Movies tend to have a bit more artistry about them than the more prosaic needs of weekly television but even then there are some legendarily bad examples in classic movies which have bugged people for years e.g. Zhora’s stunt double in Blade Runner (the dodgy wig + slow motion = nowhere to hide). At least that one got sorted out.

I watched True Lies a few years ago and that horse scene is so bad and obvious, even on the ancient DVD. On UHD it would be like a pie to the face.

Shitjob? You talking about the VHS? The 4K Blade Runner looks spectacular!

Below taken directly from the review:

"Compared to the dated Blu-ray, Blade Runner's UHD presentation can't help but look better, but it's more than better—it's astonishing."
