Chris Condon told me it was lost many years ago and they could not find the original negative. He screened it at his Vagabond Theatre in LA in the 80s and they were desperate to find his print which of course, Chris could not find.

I’d be VERY happy to learn that the 35mm over/under 3-D negative has been found!

They have them.That is a fact.I assume the box set option would be for the :-D titles as they are already releasing A Day Of Judgment solo.I’m sure they are working out some plan.They’re not going to tell me everything...I’m just some guy.But it probably wouldn’t hurt to put a bug in their ear about the desire for a box set with all six 3-D flicks.When i asked specifically about the 3-D titles.tthey confirmed they have them but regarding the 3DFA,box set or 3-D transfers I was told ae’re not sure yet.

I could say that releasing these films 2d would be a complete travesty, make zero sense, but let's face it, that's preaching to the choir here.

But when you consider a title which is literally TALES OF THE THIRD DIMENSION - I don't think it is unreasonable in the slightest to expect 3-D. Vinegar Syndrome have shown how to cater to the collector market with a largely unknown 3-D title in Silent Madness.

The point I would make is if you're scanning the negative for an under/over 3-D title, you already get both left and right sides for the same expense of scanning a standard 35mm film. There is no separate set of reels to be scanned.

Most of these films do not have significant star power. I believe it's been said that Ownesby considered 3-D served the same purpose. Some people might know about Hyperspace, because Chris Elliot and Paula Poundstone are in it, but something like Chain Gang is probably going to be of significantly more interest to 3-D enthusiasts than anyone else. Although I don't doubt that those interested in pulp genre movies will be open to it.

As single strip 3-D, I presume if no print or pre-print element survives, it may only survive in 2d VHS quality. Which would be a crying shame. I wonder were prints shipped overseas to create video masters for the PAL and SECAM VHS releases?

According to the SEVERIN podcast they've been in North Carolina shooting special features for future titles at Owensby Studios so you seem to have some inside info here....

If these aren't released in 3D it would be a catastrophe for 3D collectors

Are you somewhere local to the folks who run the label, are you likely to have a follow-up encounter? If so, ask them about Hyperspace, and whether it still exists in 35mm form. It's something they really need to look into if they're doing this deal, because in terms of commercial potential it is probably one of the more important titles.

My guess based on what I was told is that The Wolfman will come next.Rottweiler and Tales From The Third Dimension are definites but it is a package deal including the 6 or possibly 5�� 3-D Titles.I dont know how far through the catalogue they have gotten so far.They sId they didnt’t know if the :-D’s would be released flat or 3-D,they were considering a box set (I’m assuming for those titles and they didnt know if they were going to be working with 3DFA or not...so I have a feeling (unless it was distraction) that they really aren't sure what is going where,what they have or when yet...which is why I am making this call to arms to you guys to let them know there is a demand for the 3-D six polarized! Again,we aren’t getting a second chance at this.I had the pleasure of meeting Worth Keeter and seeing a few of these films in 3D years ago...they’re surprisingly good and entertaining!! And the 3-D is amazing!!

I’m not discouraged. Like ourselves, I’m sure they have a very full plate and we will hear from the appropriate parties when the time is right.

After all, I’m confident they want the very best 3-D restoration and don’t want any worries about a recall due to sloppy work!

The linked interview about the film gave details about how the 3-D was used in portions of the film to convey a sort of heightened reality to certain scenes. Possibly similar to how the more recent 3D film Billy Lynn cut to some scenes in high frame rate. Unfortunately that link seems to be down. I believe it mentioned that plans for a 3-D release were scrapped.

I felt that there had to be some way, cinematically, to show that the Viet Nam reality was a more intense reality than this life back here. So, I thought that if I could use color as an effect other than making the whole movie in color. I’d let it be the contrast, the super-reality. So anything in Viet Nam-or in the protagonist’s life as he becomes more alive-that reality would be in color to make it all the more intense.

That’s also when I thought that I’d never seen 3-D used aesthetically, to heighten an image or to isolate it from a flat background. I thought, “Wouldn’t it be fun to use 3-D in a way other than just poking spears at the audiences’ face?” What could be better than to flash to Viet Nam and have it in 3-D and in color then go back to the kind of bland, black & white American landscape? I got a lot of criticism for my mixing of color and black & white. At that time, it wasn’t done except for, say, THE WIZARD OF OZ. I had a lot of people giving me grief when the movie came out for various reasons but a few told me, “It’s too bad you ran out of money, kid, and couldn’t make the whole thing in color.”

CdC: Did you use the standard red/blue 3-D or were other three-dimensional processes available?

RC:We used polarized filters. That was the next step up from red/blue. It still provided 3-D without affecting the color. However, it never was released in 3-D. That was the plan but our backer listened to a lot of old projectionists and old farts out in L.A. who complained about how difficult it is to run 3-D and how it would ruin our prints. They didn’t want to have to work harder and just wanted to start the movie and read their newspaper. I tried to tell my backer that if we could do this in just the major markets-Dallas, Detroit, L.A. We could promote the heck out of it and every stoney kid in America would want to see this amazing film. But, in the end, when it came down to making the prints of the film, he wouldn’t give up the additional money for the 3-D processing. This was after we had to build our own camera rigs for 3-D because they didn’t exist at that time. It was so frustrating that we had done so much but the backer wouldn’t give us the extra $25K for 3-D. It would have been killer.

On a side note, where can I get a decent pair of anaglyph glasses?

I tried some from scAmazon and the reviews were dead-on: the red lenses are way too dark, creating left eye strain, impairing 3D, and imparting a lifeless, almost sepia tone on the colors.
