The BBFC isn't cutting films for being "woke" as you do paranoidly state. They are putting warnings on and in some cases increasing the age rating.

I agree when/if they start cutting/banning on these grounds we should be worried. But they're not.

Here's The Telegraph's ludicrous take. The headline is disingenuous because I don't think reclassification is anything to do with "snowflakes" (the BBFC is its own small body), and reactionaries need to stop saying snowflake so much too.

Some of the examples Hymas uses are baffling:

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, originally a PG, has been extended and has, as a result, been reclassified as a 12A, for its moderate fantasy violence and threat.

“The 1936 film version of the musical Show Boat, which many people considered to be progressive in its depiction of race relations and racial injustice at the time of its original release, and which we rated U at that time, came into us again in 2020 on video.

“Some of the language, behaviour and stereotypes are not defensible at U under current guidelines, but given the historical context and dated nature of the work, we could accommodate the film at PG for outdated racist stereotypes and discriminatory language and behaviour.

“However, the extra features included several examples of racist language, necessitating a 12 rating.”

So we're meant to be outraged over an extended cut and special features? Okay. Also, Show Boat was classified on 24th June, so I think it's disingenuous to link it to George Floyd's murder a month afterwards? It's not like they changed their classification guidelines overnight.

The article suggests a recent "snowflake" shift but the example of Rocky is from the 70s, when video classification often differed from theatrical classification, and the ratings structure changed.

Rocky, which starred Sylvester Stallone as a small time club fighter who gets a shot at the world championship, was classified as an A by the BBFC in 1976 and has been PG on video ever since.

Here's the dissenting opinion from David Green of a group I've never heard of called Civitas.

“The censors have lost sight of the sound moral messages that these films had at the time and allowed themselves to be distracted by modern sensibilities towards victimhood and grievance,”

But the BBFC has always been thinking of victimhood, whether it's video nasties or Child's Play 3 and Bulger, or rape scenes in The Evil Dead, The Last House on the Left, I Spit On Your Grave and Straw Dogs, or child abuse in Pretty Baby or Sweet Sweetback.

And it's true that morality changes with every era, otherwise abortion or homosexuality would still be illegal.

I think the headline buries some of the useful information in here, like issues like "terrorism, suicide, self-harm" which do need to be considered for appropriate viewing, because they can connect to trauma and be triggering if not explored in a film sensitively.

Back in 1980 the film did actually catch some flack from public and press over the S&M overtones, especially with Ornella Muti: if there had been a 12 or a 12A at the time it would have got it, but IIRC they said that while the film was undeniably 'kinky,' it wasn't overt enough to merit a AA (no-one under 14).
