If you couldn't find Chop Shop, Man Push Cart is also a good one to grab by the same director. Myth of Sisyphus meets the American dream.

Ghost Dog is enjoyable, I mentioned it before elsewhere but you can back-to-back watch with Deep Cover.

For what it's worth, Janus released it on DVD through Image back before the turn of the century.

Even though Criterion was releasing titles on DVD by then, Janus released 20 titles through Image. Some got official Criterion releases later on, such as Odd Man Out and The Human Condition trilogy. Some had been Criterion (or Voyager) LDs previously.

Which is better Rushomon or Throne of Blood? Both are on sale on iTunes. Although I’ve gotta say I’m leaning towards Throne of Blood. (I do plan on getting them physically at some point.) but you can’t be $7.99 I already bought Lady Snowblood and Hidden Fortress.

Both are amazing and different from each other. Rashomon is an ensemble piece where the central concept is the perception of truth and lies. Throne of Blood is a great adaptation of Macbeth with a blistering star turn from Toshiro Mifune (and a strong supporting cast of course) - it also has more action if that's a thing for you.

Rashomon is my favorite Kurosawa film hands down.

1. Innovative lighting/Kazuo Miyagawa.
2. Faster editing than people/western audiences were used to at the time+ first foreign film that really opened up westerners eyes to other filmmakers outside N.A.
3. Cast = You get 1. Takashi Shimura 2. Machiko Kyō 3. Toshiro Mifune

There's 3 good reasons you will discover more or you can go with a Shakespeare Story/Play/Throne of Blood.

Both are great films, but if I had to pick only one, I would go with Throne of Blood. Just a more epic feature with one of the Mifune's best performances.

I've seen replies for both options, but will add a vote for Rashomon. It's historically important: as the first Japanese film to be internationally recognized and awarded, it really opened the door to all the great Japanese cinema that came after. It's still widely regarded among the top 20-25 films of all time. And, as my first Criterion purchase, it was my personal gateway to both the Collection and world cinema as a whole. Throne of Blood is great, but you have to get Rashomon first. It's what made everything else possible.

Why is it that some of their films during the 50% off sale aren't reduced in price? Was looking forward to buying blu-ray of Breaking the Waves but it was only reduced by $6 to $33 unless I missed something. Held off watching their laser disc for this purchase but alas was not to be. Maybe next sale.

Are you buying from Criterion site, Barnes, Amazon?

Criterion and Barnes all titles are on sale except preorders. Some preorders work at Barnes, if the disc is coming out during the sale.

Amazon does put all on sale, just price matches some titles.

Yep, as Gavicory says, it is reduced. I think what may have happened is they may have been looking at the previous Dual Format edition, which for some reason shows up first when searching on B&N. And they haven't reduced the price of that one either (it is technically OOP). It's not even easy to find the re-release of it. You'd have to click the dual format one, and think click the "View All Available Formats & Editions" link to bring it up. I usually just type in UPC codes to find things easier on B&N.

In terms of film + style these would be my top picks

Whether it's movies or music or whatever, don't ever let anyone make you feel shitty for not having experienced something yet. I'll never forget how many people annoyingly said to me "You're in film school and you've never seen [THIS MOVIE]??" I'm 50 now and believe me, there's plenty of time to see more movies. Also, those self-righteous types often just wanted to oh so temporarily feel superior to you, a (presumably young) student. I quickly came to discover that gate-keeper types are such sad people, and sharing your discoveries with others is one of the greatest joys in having knowledge. I've committed a lot of my life and work to doing just that.

I agree with you, although I’ve seen very few of those gate-keeper types in this thread. 98% of the folks here are pretty cool.

As for film studies, I would start with the silents and work forward chronologically.
