Also, during the scene where Hanna screams at Hank Azaria, Mann cut the line "Ferocious, aren't I?". It's an iconic line from the film.

It's similar to what he did to Mohicans for the 1999 DVD cut, he removed a lot of the more "written" sounding dialogue. I love the fact that his dialogue is not 1000% naturalistic. At least he reinstated most of the cut dialogue for the 2010 BD cut of Mohicans.
Wow, I never actually knew that! Thank you so much for explaining.

I have that disc as well as the 4K HDR stream and I’ve gotta say that I prefer the exterior shots shot during the day on the 4K transfer, but everything shot at night looks much better on the Warner disc.

The HDR grade is simply too dim, and this is on a calibrated OLED which nearly always shines with this kind of stuff. Even with dynamic tone mapping enabled many shots are just too dim which is a shame. For this reason I strongly recommend that you guys watch this one in the dark. Especially those of you with OLEDs or high-end LED LCDs like the Sony Z series, 9/90/900 series Samsungs or similar.

I really doubt that the 4K Blu will be anything more than just a higher bitrate encode of the stream, but this is clearly how Mann wants Heat to look.

I heard Heat was filmed, edited and released all in 1995. Is this true? Mann did a hell of a job if all of production and release was done in less than a year

That's actually perfectly ordinary for a big studio film.

IMDB says it was filmed from 21 February 1995 - 19 July 1995, which is admittedly a longer than usual shoot. However, you can bet they were editing as they filmed. It didn't come out until Christmas, so they had a reasonable amount of time to do post-production.

What's interesting about the comment about making the film look like it was just shot is that I remember Mann saying a few years ago about his Ferrari project (that's still in the works) that he was thinking of going back to celluloid for that one. I tried finding the quote but can't, it was shocking to read in a good way.

Sounds like I should skip this 4K disc and stick with my WB BD.

Why must they tinker? Sigh.

I never watch UHDs with any kind of ambient background light. Ever.

Neither do I no matter if it’s HDR or SDR, but I know that most people don’t.

Same, it's a shame. This was one I was definitely going to grab in August. Even though I just watched Heat like 5 times, I still want to get a UHD eventually. It's one of the best movies from the 90s and one of the best Crime Dramas ever imo.

We still may get an announcement but I'm not keeping my fingers crossed.

Like I wrote before, factoring in the time span between the official Speed 4K announcement and its release date, the Heat 4K announcement should happen around July 17th, so until that date passes I believe we’re still on track

This was my post a few weeks ago, so until the second week of July passes without an official announcement I remain hopeful

It also helped that it was a remake of his earlier, terrible TV movie, so already working through elements of the story and dialogue once helped him "hone" it, per se, for the newer version. Although he still overshot like he always does.

I tried it once with an Ideal Lume 6500K light behind the set, eventually stopped using it.

I am curious if the 4K version will get released to coincide with the prequel/sequel novel Michael Mann is writing. The book was supposed to be out a few years ago but was delayed, so perhaps the two will see the light of day later this year.

Disney announced the release plan 48 days before Speed UHD released, and today is exactly 48 days from August 31... I'll give up hope after waiting past this week. So how did the 'August 31' date originally come about? I'm starting to regret selling my Definitive Edition Blu-ray.

Not to rub salt in the wound. But that’s why I never sell a previous release until I get the new one in my hands. Too many variables.
