I had expected everyone to be completely scrubbed of any lines or details in their faces. Perhaps its something I'll see more clearly in subsequent Trek movies.

I did notice the lack of grain though, and even though this may have me hanged on this forum, that didn't really bother me at all.
Last week I watched the entire Back to the Future trilogy (iTunes 4k Dolby Vision) and I must confess that the excessive grain in some of the scenes in the first movie was extremely distracting, although it wasn't as noticeable in the other two movies. Or maybe I just got more used to it and stopped noticing as they went on.......
The “clarity” of Blu-ray has nothing to do with it; stripping the grain away with some of the worst DNR I’ve ever seen on ST VI is what does it.

I fear I will be watching the two-disc DVD of Star Trek 6 for the rest of my life. I wonder if the streaming version has the same heavy DNR.

Yeah, the Paramount Zulu looks pretty bad.

The DNR also does wonky color things to make them look excessively sunburned.

I have the Twilight Time Blu-ray that comes from an older scan but looks a lot better IMO.

Well, I've been telling everyone that the digital versions aren't as scrubbed, but I just had another look at VI on iTunes, and I may have made that up.

For whatever reason, the digital versions don't look as waxy to me, but looking at them again, it may just be that the heavier compression hides the DNR a little more. So, one of those pick your poison things. I'm really sorry if I steered anyone wrong.

At any rate, I hope the 4K rumors are true (and that they'll be more Hunt For Red October than Grease).

If it's the same one as the caps of the streaming version earlier in the thread then it's still shit, just a different kind of shit to the Blu-ray.

The other TREK films, at least last time I checked, are from the older HD masters originally made for the DVD special editions in the beginning of the 2000s.

At least on Vudu. iTunes may be using the newer Blu-ray masters that were hit with the NR stick made around 2008 or so.

Star Trek IV - even with the older master, looks pretty good. They were so aggressive with the DNR on the Blu they erased the seagull "fleeing" the probe's initial wave vaporizing the water shot. It's still there on the streaming.

The exception of Wrath of Khan of course, which looks lovely. The DV master's gamma levels are pretty much perfect - it gets rid of those dang garbage mattes that pop up often around Regula and Reliant on the older transfers.

And you're right about ST:VI. Too bright. Not OAR.

So will the 4K set have remastered Blus? I noticed TMP has a new isolated score track on the Blu-Ray so maybe they have on there?

(also, boo to still no Director's Cut for TMP)

I don't see anywhere in the press release on this site that says the new BD's are remastered. It looks like the TMP one is because it has the new isolated score.

Man, I pre-ordered this an hour ago as soon as the listing went up. Express delivery to Germany.

The Motion Picture is by far my favorite movie of all time, for all the right (and wrong) reasons.

I'm also very glad they'll be doing the Director's Cut as well for 2022. The theatrical cut will always be my go-to version (CGI Vulcan is so out of place; I much prefer the artificial/claustrophobic original look), but it'll be nice to have both.

Here's why I think putting movies 1 through 4 together is actually a cool idea:

The Original Series showed them as a group of friends, at home on the Enterprise.

Along comes The Motion Picture, and we're shocked to find our heroes strewn by the wind, awkward and alienated from one another. Over the first four films, they go through middle age, depression, losing and rescuing a family member, losing and regaining their home.

At the very end of The Voyage Home, the family is back together, they are completely at peace, preparing to move into their new/old home: the Enterprise. Full circle.

(The movies might as well have stopped right then and there, 5 and 6 seem like afterthoughts when it comes to character development.)

Is that from the US to Germany? In the original Press release it has a date of 9th September for Germany.

5 is more of a stand-alone story, but VI follows up on a lot of the ongoing storylines from II-IV (the long term effect of David's death on Kirk, and the peace treaty hinted at in III and IV etc) and gives them proper closure IMO.
