It’s been two years since their last Fassbinder, I’m pretty sure the Fassbinder foundation has worked to restore everything, so it makes sense.

I would be up for more German cinema from Criterion!

I also bet Fassbinder, because it’s starting to feel like Criterion is refusing to release the Kurosawa set that I want. But I also want Fassbinder so I won’t be upset if we get a Fassbinder set.

Is it? Didn't know that. I figured they might save a boxset for that number. Oh well.

Aside from Godzilla (which the site even teased as “spine 1000!!!”), has anything been really ”momentously” celebratory about this every hundred spine numbers? I feel like every hundred we really go around in circles trying to find meaning in them.

Most of them time they aren't major releases. There are a few exceptions. Spine 900 was the Olympics set. A couple of them have been Wes Anderson films (400, and 700). One of the more cooler uses of numbers was giving #666 to The Devil's Backbone. Literally the devil's spine.

Ah yeah I remember Devil's Backbone. Didn't realize that about the Olympic set, but I kinda glossed by that release at the Tim.

Yeah. And I mean, if we’re gonna talk about loving Bresson as a sign of a filmmaker’s seriousness or potential or whatever, like was brought up with Paul Dano, Benny Safdie’s all-time favorite film is A Man Escaped.

It’s easy to pigeonhole an early career based on a couple of films, as seems to be going on in this discussion. I mean, can you imagine judging Scorsese based on just Boxcar Bertha and Mean Streets? “Well, I guess one of those was pretty good, but whatever.” And then, bam, he drops Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore and his potential is a whole different ballpark.

It won't since it's already spine #12.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I now expect the Citizen Kane UHD upgrade to get that number. Former spine #1 on LD X first Criterion 4K = spine #1111, likely in line for a December release. Makes perfect sense to me!

I can see why people hate digipaks, my replacement copy of Mirror came damaged and this time even worse. They just had to go with weak cardboard

This is quite a devastating month!

There are some remarkable titles here including Devi and High Sierra, with upgrades to Ratcatcher and Onibaba.

And who would have thought Spine 1100 would be The Incredible Shrinking Man? Maybe Criterion is giving us a hint that its really the incredible shrinking spine as the forthcoming UHD releases might shake up the spine numbers or at least use the same spine numbers for their UHD upgrades in 2022. In any case, don't call a shrink after pouring honey on your kids!

If Criterion and A24 are teaming up for titles, this is going to be a huge achievement for Janus Films.

I could totally see these titles in the collection someday:

On the Rocks
Midsommar
The Lighthouse
Ex Machina
Moonlight
High Life
The Last Black Man in San Francisco
The Killing of a Sacred Deer
The Lobster
Mid90s
Lady Bird
Waves

Finally, for Criterion's first UHD, we all know it will likely be Citizen Kane in its 80th anniversary release.

But why not go for broke and say the 2nd UHD release will be James Cameron's The Abyss! What a statement that would be, especially since its the first film that uses groundbreaking CGI. Criterion doesn't specialize in blockbuster movies though (unless you want to include Armageddon and The Rock as two ill-fated releases on DVD), but it still would be even more shocking than ever.
Disney would never license The Abyss to Criterion. It may seem there is no interest to release it, but they know people want it and they know it will be a cash cow once it gets on the market.

Criterion has licensed In Fabric from A24 also to release at some point. I'm not sure they going to start releasing waves of A24 titles, but they seem to be picking and choosing certain films they like.

That's pretty cool. I wish I had known this a while back though, I ordered the current version on bluray but was disappointed to see it was a Lionsgate BD-R.

It was the price of a Criterion too...

The Jean Vigo collection is the best thing I bought from Criterion, and the fact that it rarely gets mentioned is a crime. No true cinephile can afford to snub it

I know, it was a pipe dream even thinking a movie like The Abyss would ever make it to an arthouse distributor like Janus. In all likelihood, that film may never see a blu-ray and maybe not even 4k. I guess it belongs where the title says it is: In an abyss.

In terms of A24 films, would be interesting to see Val come to the collection.

Looking back at the picture of Lulu Wang in the Criterion closet and with the precedent of Uncut Gems, I hope it means that The Farewell is coming to the collection.

I’m sure it’ll hit at some point, probably when it (and True Lies) can make the biggest impact on the Avatar sequel. There’s no way that James Cameron will allow two of his rather limited catalog to stay off shelves forever.

Why would it be a pipe dream for it to wind up on Criterion, as a general notion? This is a collection that has two Michael Bay movies in it. They’d LOVE to have some more under-appreciated commercial films in particular, I think.
