KANE is not a bad choice for UHD criterion debut. But. I still say, they should go with more universal themed, oscar sweeping themed and popular themed B&W motion picture.

Criterion should not take a risk with B&W debut. The safest bet is ON THE WATERFRONT (won best pic, actor and director, more appealing than KANE story and screenplay wise, also has lead actor fan following).

A risk......with Citizen Kane? You do realize, regardless of it winning less Oscars, it's a much more recognizable and popular film than On the Waterfront now, right?

I mean…Citizen Kane is so well known that it was the subject of one of the most famous comic strips ever printed. I thiiiiiiiink it’s pretty safe.

I am actually unware tbh.
Rotten Tomatoes already downgraded it. The Last 2 decades of CITIZEN KANE, I dont think it aged well. comparatively speaking (vs Godfather)

My point is...how does Criterion Market it to saa less avid film buff to pick up CITIZEN KANE in 4K UHD at $49.99 especially its in B&W?

You cant advertise it was Oscar Best Picture winner. $50 for a B&W 4K is a lot for non-avid film buff especially if marketed to millinials.

Yes, they downgraded it because they dug up an 80-year-old review, and now it’s only in the top 40 best reviewed films of all time.

You advertise it as the film most often acclaimed as the greatest film ever made. Criterion 001.

Not to mention Sony have not licensed UHD rights in the US/UK.

Is there much to add to a Welles set at this point that a standalone release or two couldn't take care of? TOO MUCH JOHNSON can be a supplement on a KANE release, and WIND could/should gets it own disc. Unless they do something and really start cutting deep.

EDIT: Oh there's still The Trial floating about too

Kino is hopeful to have TOUCH OF EVIL for November too, which would be an overlap if this were a thing.

Aside from all of the innate reasons that Citizen Kane would be a very sound and safe choice for Criterion, Mank helped raise the movie's profile again among younger audiences, and potentially, they could put both films out in the same month (though there would be tons of groans if they did that and Mank was only on blu ray).

I see in the database here it has the film Mr. Klein (1976) listed as coming from Criterion. Can someone tell me where this was announced?

Thanks. For future reference, where would I go to find links to sources like this as I can't seem to find it in the database entry.

Go to the BD page, then go to Edit Movie, and then go down to Studio, and look at the field on the right side of it where people can type in a source. They don't always put something there though.

M by Fritz Lang is another favorite. Hell, let me just right out a list. I could go on and on but I'll try to restrain myself just a bit:

Charulata or The Big City by Satyajit Ray
M by Fritz Lang
Picnic at Hanging Rock by Peter Weir
Taste of Cherry by Abbas Kiarostami
Diabolique or The Wages of Fear by Henri-Georges Clouzot
Harakiri or Kwaidan by Masaki Kobayashi
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul by Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Wings of Desire by Wim Wenders
Ugetsu by Kenji Mizoguchi
Ace in the Hole by Billy Wilder
My Darling Clementine by John Ford
Kuroneko by Kineto Shindo
Two Days, One Night by the Dardenne brothers
Phoenix by Christian Petzold
McCabe & Mrs. Miller by Robert Altman
Black Girl by Ousmane Sembene
45 Years by Andrew Haigh
La poison by Sascha Guitry
Certain Women by Kelly Reichardt
Barry Lyndon by Stanley Kubrick
All About My Mother by Pedro Almodovar
The Cremator by Juraj Herz
I'll keep these in mind. I looked a few of them up and Kwaidan sounds cool being an anthology horror film.

Getting some silent films might be good for me. Those sci-fi recs also got me too. The last 10 are things I'll consider too. The many choices I could make really make me want to pick some good ones now but I at least know when the 50% sale happens again, I have more to get.

Looking at this, they all seem really cool. I might get this and two others from the other posts. Thanks to all of you for the advice!

It took a second viewing for me to fully appreciate Citizen Kane. A 4K release would be an insta-buy from me.

Disney stream looks absolutely solid from the brief look I took, especially having watched the HD stream on there only recently, but literally anything Wes Anderson in 4K is an immediate buy from me. Especially Rushmore.

Went out of town to KC and went to one of their bigger B&N and found Crash. They had a pretty good selection at their store vs mine.

Why would it be a pipe dream for it to wind up on Criterion, as a general notion? This is a collection that has two Michael Bay movies in it. They’d LOVE to have some more under-appreciated commercial films in particular, I think.
I'd like to know the deeper story behind what compelled Criterion to release those 2 Michael Bay movies on DVD. Was it pure luck? Was it seriously thought through? Was it an attempt to compete with larger video distributors and studios?

If anyone can explain the backstory behind how (and more importantly why) in the world did Criterion get Armageddon and The Rock, I'd love to hear!

Furthermore, if someone should ever make a documentary film about the Criterion Collection, I'd like the mystery behind the Bay blockbuster movies to be revealed.
