Madman's Collector's Edition and Standard Edition won't be available for preorder until December 1.

The CE will retail at $169.95, while the standard is $99.95, so they work out notably cheaper than importing the UK editions.
So, the UE is $512 in Australia
UK is ~$565.80(aud)
US is ~$479.86(aud)
Full prices used for comparison as AU don't have a preorder price apparently

CE is $169.95 in Aust
UK is ~$237.99
US is ~$239.91

Standard is $99.95 in Aust
UK is ~$113.14
US is ~$63.06

So, Australia actually has some of the best prices, shockingly. Our CE is like $70 cheaper. US seems to have had the cheapest prices for the UE, but reading this thread, I guess these don't include taxes, which get added after? That's always been weird to me, all our stuff here in Aus has taxes included in the prices already.

Even with that though, US standard edition looks like a pretty good deal. I'm amazed the UE would've been cheaper here than in the UK though (if preorder prices weren't a thing).

In a few hours though UE will be available to order here, I'm just wondering whether we'll actually get a preorder price though, like everyone else and they're just waiting for orders to open before announcing it.

I find the order date for the other editions odd though. Preorders are usually available on Madman's site 2 months ahead of release, so I'm guessing Dec 1 might just be a placeholder date and preorders will actually open in October or something. That or our release date for those is later than everyone else's, which wouldn't surprise me tbh, we usually get stuff later. Us getting the Ultimate edition at the same time maybe just being because they were produced for all regions around the same time.

Nope. To quote their FAQs: "Due to restrictions in licenses with our partners, the GKIDS store is only able to ship purchases to customers who live in the United States, Canada (on select titles), and U.S. territories. "

Since GKIDS' entire business model is based on acquiring North American distribution rights for content produced in Japan and Europe, it would make sense that they'd restrict their shipping output to the US and Canada in order to stay in the good graces of their titles' respective copyright owners (i.e. their "partners").

If GKIDS were to ship outside of their licensed territory, it would cut into the profits of other territories' distributors of the same title and inevitably result in complaints to the entity granting the distribution rights in the first place. As such it's not a smart move in the context of the film distribution business.

Of course we’re all interested in comparing the two releases, but you can’t draw any conclusions based on the number of discs. It’s just a waste of time.
Yeah but... it's FUN to conjecture and discuss... where else to do this if not here? No need to police what/how people discuss a release in its own official thread.

Personally I love the CE artwork, but am also a fan of minimalist designs. I love the case artwork too, with the eva unit numbers and corresponding color stripes. To me it's all very elegant, and works well as a total package.

I think it also helps set it apart from every other release (DVD or BD) we've seen which usually has character artwork. Gives it a real exclusive identity among the other releases, imo.

I also really like the combo of BD cases and small artbook, as this is what a lot of LEs from boutique labels consist of, eg. Arrow's LEs.

To me the CE is going to fit right in next to my other movie LEs on my shelf.

If someone just wants the standard edition, the US one's certainly the way to go in terms of pricepoint (plus you get a slipcover, for anyone that's into that), however I suspect it'll be region locked.

Of course it's going to be locked to Region "A". If anything, both Anime Limited and Madman would be rather displeased with Khara if GKIDS' release were not region locked and thus potentially "spill over" into their respective territories, and surely GKIDS would feel the same if the UK/AU releases weren't locked to Region "B".

While there's little that can be done about those who own region-free BD players, in the larger scheme of things their numbers are relatively minuscule and thus can be ignored from a business model standpoint.

But that's not what's going on here in the world of Blu Ray consumers/collectors. Nobody buys 25, or 50, or 100, or whatever amount of limited edition of a particular anime. It just doesn't happen. If it did; we'd all have seen dozens upon dozens of listings for the Funimation Violet Evergarden LE (which was crazy in high demand mind you), or we'd see dozens of listings of the Evangelion Ultimate Edition pre-order listings. But if a person is trying to impose moral high ground by suggesting that they deserve it more simply because they'll use is it is bullshit. If a person wants something bad enough - they'll find a way to own it. And if I, or anyone for that matter, manage to own something that someone else wanted - it just means I wanted it more than they did. Plain and simple. And when I do get what I want, that bad boy is staying in it's packaging, and I won't feel the least bit bad about it.

It's not hard at all to imagine why someone wouldn't take something out of a package. You just need perspective.

Example: Car collecting. Now, what's the most common trait among car collectors that they all share?

They don't drive the cars. But why? Why fork over 100k+ for a vehicle that never gets driven. What a total waste!.... right? Well, not exactly. You see, with automobile collectors - It's not about the joy rides, or the fancy seating, or driving it to work every day to make you feel special.

It's about preservation, because nothing lasts forever. And to really drive my point home: (no pun intended) what's the first thing you feel when you manage to see one of these vintage cars out in the wild? For when automobile collectors finally DO take a vintage car out for a spin?

Admiration and respect.

It's the whole point of car shows. To see what people have chosen to preserve against the hand of time. I personally give more respect to automobile collectors who know what they have, and take care of it as opposed to the opposite. And never, not once, do you see some schmuck walk up to a collector who owns a well preserved vintage Ford GT and ask "wHy DoNt yOu DrIvE tHiS tO WoRk???"
[Show spoiler]

I'm sorry, but for all you know any given set you haven't opened might have missing/duplicate/scratched discs. Preservation work is about storing a valuable, complete and working object under the safest and best environment-controlled conditions. You would do much better by opening your sets, playing them at least once to verify they're in good condition and then storing them in a bank vault with environment control.

And also one must not lose perspective of why something is being preserved in the first place: so it can be enjoyed eventually in the future. Locking out a film to never be watched again is purposeless. As it is you are only preserving plastic wrap and a cardboard box.

Oh, and classic cars get driven around all the time. They're just not used as everyday cars. They actually need to be driven around X amount of times a year in order to keep the parts working and in good condition.

I really love that illustration. [Mild plot spoilers]:

I couldn't bring myself to preorder the LE but I pounced on the CE as soon as I saw it. The staggered releases is a little strange but I guess it is what it is. The digital release is the earliest at 02NOV2021 I think.

Well it's past midnight here, so technically the first. There's a buy now button on the Australian Eva page, but it doesn't lead anywhere. Maybe it'll work sometime tomorrow morning.

Less then 50 ultimate sets left in the UK. No where near the frenzy in the US but still going pretty fast for a 2500 piece mediocre release considering the price.

Given us all of the special features worth watching, subtitled and translated in English for the first time, is a weird way to describe mediocre.

There should be an extra one for the UK soon, I’ve requested a cancellation on my copy. Much prefer the smaller size of the CE (not bothered about the smaller book and other extra stuff).

On a non-UE/CE/SE topic, I just finished the remains of the Netflix/VSI dub of the TV series. I'm sorta wiggin' out on Bakugo (MHA) of all flippin' people is this dub's voice of Kaworu; quite the contrast.

There are inconsistencies in the "official" dub, at least with pronunciations of terms/names, but I'm gonna chalk it up for it being a rushed production. Aside from that (and the obvious elephants in the room), I've grown easily accustomed to the VSI treatment. I don't know what's Carrie Kerenan's thought process with directing the actors, but as I hear it, she's mirroring the tone and attitude closer to the ADV cast than the original seiyuu cast. If not exclusively that, it's merging the two. Especially with Shinji's actor, which merges the awkwardness of Spike Spencer with the youthfulness of Megumi Ogata, and the execution worked very well in their moments of frailty and glimpses of hope. Kudos to Casey Mongillo, they did really good work. I also liked Carrie's take on Misato, she can pull off her takes...except for the Next Episode promos. Her lines generally come off as flat, and while she does get a bit better overtime, she's missing the enthusiasm that Allison Shipp-Keith delivers whenever Misato promises "fanservice". The new Asuka voice doesn't get as many German one-liners as before, but the lines she did get, she pulled it off charmingly. The rest are a mix of exceptional to okay, I'm none-plussed with Ray Chase sounds younger than he should be as Gendo and whoever did Rei's voice made her less stoic...which doesn't sit well with me.

I've come to accept the idea of this dub being the status quo for those who are new to show, or at least new to the language. Which makes recasting them for the Rebuild films a bitter adjustment, but I already forewarned that a while ago.

Not at all unique to this release, but I really don't understand that bit along the top that just says BLU-RAY. Put that on the slipcover, sure, but there's no need for it on the actual case insert.

I'm pretty sure that Yoshiyuki Sadamoto used Michaelangelo's "Pieta" sculpture as an inspiration.

It's pretty much the default GKIDS template for their releases distributed via Shout Factory. Not just anime mind you, but European and Chinese animation titles such as "Secret of the Kells" and "White Snake" as well.

At least in those cases there's information to be conveyed that's not on the case itself, though I guess if you look at it as clarifying that it's Blu-ray only then it makes some sense.

Disney does similar stuff with a lot of the Marvel/Star Wars films IIRC, with even DVDs having a bar across the top that just reads "DVD." I guess for me this particular style just seems like squandering already-decreased vertical real estate on an element that isn't integrated that well with the actual artwork.
