UK is ~$565.80(aud) US is ~$479.86(aud) Full prices used for comparison as AU don't have a preorder price apparently CE is $169.95 in Aust UK is ~$237.99 US is ~$239.91 Standard is $99.95 in Aust UK is ~$113.14 US is ~$63.06 So, Australia actually has some of the best prices, shockingly. Our CE is like $70 cheaper. US seems to have had the cheapest prices for the UE, but reading this thread, I guess these don't include taxes, which get added after? That's always been weird to me, all our stuff here in Aus has taxes included in the prices already. Even with that though, US standard edition looks like a pretty good deal. I'm amazed the UE would've been cheaper here than in the UK though (if preorder prices weren't a thing). In a few hours though UE will be available to order here, I'm just wondering whether we'll actually get a preorder price though, like everyone else and they're just waiting for orders to open before announcing it. I find the order date for the other editions odd though. Preorders are usually available on Madman's site 2 months ahead of release, so I'm guessing Dec 1 might just be a placeholder date and preorders will actually open in October or something. That or our release date for those is later than everyone else's, which wouldn't surprise me tbh, we usually get stuff later. Us getting the Ultimate edition at the same time maybe just being because they were produced for all regions around the same time. |

Since GKIDS' entire business model is based on acquiring North American distribution rights for content produced in Japan and Europe, it would make sense that they'd restrict their shipping output to the US and Canada in order to stay in the good graces of their titles' respective copyright owners (i.e. their "partners"). If GKIDS were to ship outside of their licensed territory, it would cut into the profits of other territories' distributors of the same title and inevitably result in complaints to the entity granting the distribution rights in the first place. As such it's not a smart move in the context of the film distribution business. |

Personally I love the CE artwork, but am also a fan of minimalist designs. I love the case artwork too, with the eva unit numbers and corresponding color stripes. To me it's all very elegant, and works well as a total package.
I think it also helps set it apart from every other release (DVD or BD) we've seen which usually has character artwork. Gives it a real exclusive identity among the other releases, imo. I also really like the combo of BD cases and small artbook, as this is what a lot of LEs from boutique labels consist of, eg. Arrow's LEs. To me the CE is going to fit right in next to my other movie LEs on my shelf. |

While there's little that can be done about those who own region-free BD players, in the larger scheme of things their numbers are relatively minuscule and thus can be ignored from a business model standpoint. |

![]() [Show spoiler] I'm sorry, but for all you know any given set you haven't opened might have missing/duplicate/scratched discs. Preservation work is about storing a valuable, complete and working object under the safest and best environment-controlled conditions. You would do much better by opening your sets, playing them at least once to verify they're in good condition and then storing them in a bank vault with environment control. And also one must not lose perspective of why something is being preserved in the first place: so it can be enjoyed eventually in the future. Locking out a film to never be watched again is purposeless. As it is you are only preserving plastic wrap and a cardboard box. Oh, and classic cars get driven around all the time. They're just not used as everyday cars. They actually need to be driven around X amount of times a year in order to keep the parts working and in good condition. |

Given us all of the special features worth watching, subtitled and translated in English for the first time, is a weird way to describe mediocre.

There should be an extra one for the UK soon, I’ve requested a cancellation on my copy. Much prefer the smaller size of the CE (not bothered about the smaller book and other extra stuff).

On a non-UE/CE/SE topic, I just finished the remains of the Netflix/VSI dub of the TV series. I'm sorta wiggin' out on Bakugo (MHA) of all flippin' people is this dub's voice of Kaworu; quite the contrast.
There are inconsistencies in the "official" dub, at least with pronunciations of terms/names, but I'm gonna chalk it up for it being a rushed production. Aside from that (and the obvious elephants in the room), I've grown easily accustomed to the VSI treatment. I don't know what's Carrie Kerenan's thought process with directing the actors, but as I hear it, she's mirroring the tone and attitude closer to the ADV cast than the original seiyuu cast. If not exclusively that, it's merging the two. Especially with Shinji's actor, which merges the awkwardness of Spike Spencer with the youthfulness of Megumi Ogata, and the execution worked very well in their moments of frailty and glimpses of hope. Kudos to Casey Mongillo, they did really good work. I also liked Carrie's take on Misato, she can pull off her takes...except for the Next Episode promos. Her lines generally come off as flat, and while she does get a bit better overtime, she's missing the enthusiasm that Allison Shipp-Keith delivers whenever Misato promises "fanservice". The new Asuka voice doesn't get as many German one-liners as before, but the lines she did get, she pulled it off charmingly. The rest are a mix of exceptional to okay, I'm none-plussed with Ray Chase sounds younger than he should be as Gendo and whoever did Rei's voice made her less stoic...which doesn't sit well with me. I've come to accept the idea of this dub being the status quo for those who are new to show, or at least new to the language. Which makes recasting them for the Rebuild films a bitter adjustment, but I already forewarned that a while ago. Last edited by Herry Dunston; 09-01-2021 at 03:44 PM. |

Disney does similar stuff with a lot of the Marvel/Star Wars films IIRC, with even DVDs having a bar across the top that just reads "DVD." I guess for me this particular style just seems like squandering already-decreased vertical real estate on an element that isn't integrated that well with the actual artwork. |
