Love Villeneuve, so I have high hopes for this.

Dune 1984: 2h 17min (Covering whole book)
Dune 2021: 2h 35min (Covering half of the book)

Any risk Dune 2021 will be Hobbitizzzzed, meaning stretched out too long for the underlying story material? Or is there sufficient substance in the book for two 2.5h movies?

More than plenty -- the 2000 Sci-Fi Channel miniseries covered it in approximately 4.5 hours (minus ads, in the extended Director's Cut). Just praying they keep all of the "expanded universe" garbage concocted by Frank's son in all those worthless, vapid prequels/sequels/sidequels/interquels out of the narrative.

Not super worried that it was "Hobbitzzzzed", but I wonder what the heck was in the six-hour cut.

Hypothetically, if Villeneuve filmed six hours of movie for both halves, that adds up to 720 minutes, right? The book itself is only 412 pages. That's almost two minutes per page!

If both theatrical cuts are similar length, that's still about 300 minutes, or almost 3/4 of a minute per page.

So people who want the six-hour versions might want to reconsider. I can't imagine that they weren't bloated. It was probably most of the same scenes, but every scene went on forever.

Looking forward to the movie and will definitely get the 4K, though.

I wouldn't mind if it gets really long. Heck it would be pretty cool if it took up two discs like Snyder's Justice League.

I really hate the 'floating heads' movie posters!

I guess it's just like the rest of Hollywood, rehash the same stuff over and over, almost no real imagination left there anymore.

I don't think it's that they lack imagination. I think it's because they are worried this movie is going to tank and they are doing everything they can to get butts in seats. With the posters, that means highlighting their awesome cast by doing the floating heads lineup. I hate these kinds of posters, too, and I think the posters for Dune have been uninspiring, but they need to squeeze as many sales as they can out of this thing.

I think of all titles being worked on that expected release in 2020 or 2021 this one is the one that suffered the most vs what it could have been (marketing wise and theatrically) outside a covid world.

Could have been a billion dollar U.S box office like Jurassic World did. Gladly HBO are linked and they're throwing money at series and properties so the funding will be there to see this through without as much worry about return on investment you'd absolutely have seen outside this current streaming wars and "market share is everything" stock market climate.

If in all that the only downside is subpar art works and promotional materials designed to get the most generic audiences possible to buy in, swipe up, hit 'rent' on amazon, get hbo max subscriptions, and purchase on blu-ray/4K UHD? We got off easy.

Just a reminder: he wanted to do another Blade Runner movie before the theatrical run of BR49.

In other words, it means nothing. The only good thing about it, is that DV doesn't want to stop on the first book.

Since he isn’t the financier no one should take him wanting to direct something as a guarantee. It was right there in the titles. He “wants to”.

Reviews? Plural? Or did you just read one particularly bad review and not notice the others?

The pro-reviewers at rottentomatoes seem to be quite positive about Dune 2021 at least:

80% currently based on 20 reviews...

I read a few. It’s not the score that’s the problem though, it’s the tone and scope of the movie. Looks like another 2049 situation, just totally off putting to a general audience.

I’m sure I’ll love it.

I don't think tone and scope were Blade Runner 2049's problem; its problem was getting that general audience into the theater in the first place. Dune occupies an entirely different place in the cultural subconscious; I don't think the two movies can be compared very well from a marketing perspective (and that's the crux of box office success for Dune).
