Which standard BD-50 Blu-Rays have the Original Mono with the BASS? AKA no fold-downs.

also sorry to go on but the concept of an original mix doesn't make much sense anyway.. you would have a theatre mix which is an entirely different thing to something that might sound ok for home consumption

So original mix for movies like Halloween would be mix for vhs which we probably wouldn't want these days since it was done for the constraints and characteristics of magnetic media, again why people are turning their attention to ld i suppose as the best first iteration (unless we start again and go back to source where still available, which I personally would like to see a company like Criterion or other pioneer, since there does seem to be a demand emerging for it)

That first clip tells the whole story.

7.1: “Smile you son of a…” [grenade goes off in a metal drum]
mono: “Smile you son of a B*TCH!” [explosion, which doesn’t totally obscure the line]

There wouldn't be a "mix for VHS", they'd simply transfer the theatrical sound mix to the master tape. Also, VHS HiFi* was a very high-quality analog audio format. It could sound very good.

I'm considering it.

I already have the Halloween 4k and the boxed set... What does this have to offer me if the original mono is not there?

I had a funny idea, during the scene when Laurie puts the coat hanger in Michael's eye, with some computer tinkering replace Michael with Mike Myers as Wayne and have him say Denied after he pulls it out of his eye.

It does have the original 1978 mono sound mix. It just doesn’t sound good compared to the 1994 Criterion Laserdisc.

Too late to ask Shout rep here to consider the mono from the LD? The difference in that comparison is quite dramatic. I own that LD, but havent watched it in decades.

I would suggest sending the company an email. Again, they had a lot more people question them on the audio sources for H4 & H5 over H1 mainly due to the fact that they already had the original mono mix listed in the specs when the 4K announcements were first made. If they happen to reply back and confirm that they ran a fresh transfer of the 35mm mag tapes similar to what they have just done with H5 then it should be positive news.

Supposedly a representative at Shout Factory has confirmed that they will just be porting over the old mono mix included from the 2014 set. This track has been slathered with Noise Reduction and bad EQ and compression/limiting choices making it sound thin and muffled. That is a deal breaker for a few people here that wanted to buy the new 4K release.

Ahh, that sucks that they are cheaping out on the audio on this but are actually putting the laserdisc audio for Halloween 4. Would not be surprised after a few months this is out they will put out a box set of these 4k blurays with the original audio for the original $$$$$

Yeah, you may find that the balance between the various elements is a bit 'off', e.g. music or effects might sound louder than the dialogue (and this might be due to the downmixing itself rather than the faithful remix), but usually it's quite satisfactory in lieu of any actual OG soundtrack.

I've made my own mono downmix out of a decent 5.1 mix before. I did it with American Werewolf - this being before the Arrow was available with the OG mono - as the 5.1 mix on the old Live DVD was very much like an extension of the mono rather than the horrible modern 5.1 with the pitch problem, so I used Audacity to collapse it all into a mono track. Sounded fine. Also did that with Day of the Dead as the OG mono has a bad problem with sibilance in the dialogue, and as the Arrow 5.1 corrected the vast majority of problems with what was a rather infamous remix and still sounded very faithful in terms of the sound effects with much cleaner dialogue quality I did a downmix of that. And again, sounds really good.

Just got this response:

The new release will be that same as the filtered track from 2014.

I hope that helps! Please reach out to us if you have any further questions on the upcoming 4k release.

Thank you from,

This is a perfect example of "knowing too much can make you unhappy". I have been completely content with the original mono from the 2007 disc and the 2014 disc, with absolutely no idea there were any issues until this thread. I purposely have NOT checked out those YouTube clips, 'cuz I believe that sometimes ignorance IS bliss. I've been happy with this mono track for 14 years, and I'm gonna go on being happy with it, since I'll never know the difference. Can't wait til this arrives!

I’m still holding out hope that the mono will not be the old DNR’d track. Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies. Like Michael Myers.

Edit: just saw the post above. My hope is dead.

It won't really be better than the 2014 release. Best to keep on waiting imho. It's not like this film is bursting with color and hdr lmbo and tacted on same audio from b4.
