The Matrix Resurrections - Matrix 4 - trailer here:

Starts showing 22 December in the cinemas. So far I’ve only liked the original one. Wonder if 4 can resurrect that.

I predict that it will be the worst one. It looks too safe. Too reliant on nostalgia.

I also think it was a mistake to make Reeves the lead, because his character's arc ended and he can't hit as hard and high and as fast as he could eighteen years ago. A new lead would have helped rejuvenate the series.

John Wick uses guns. Even with all the gun fu, it is easier physically.

Maybe. But e.g. Blade Runner 2049 has some nostalgia and it’s one of the best sequels of all time.

Happy that they didn't try Superman-like digital erasure of moustache and beard to make John Wick look like clean shaven Neo lol.

Would anyone even want to watch a Matrix movie with someone else playing Neo? Did anyone watch Airwolf after they replaced Jan Michael Vincent? I didn't. If Tom Cruise can do Mission Impossible with real stunts himself at his age, I'm sure John Wick can manage.

I disagree. BR 2049 is adequate. Good if I am being generous, but too reliant on the old characters. What they did with Rachael and Deckard frustrated me. I also can't remember any of the music. And I didn't think building replicants that could reproduce made sense.

Yes lots of “familiar” aspects are evident. It could be a bad omen, but I’ll withhold judgment until I actually see it. There could be an explanation for these recurring motifs that makes sense within the established world of the films. Somehow…?

Hugo Weaving’s comments do make me a little worried though…

Who said someone else should play Neo? He can be there, but I'd prefer another man or woman in the lead.

Yeah, no.

I hope that isn't a stunt double, or this post is gonna look stupid. But even if it was, you would want the actor to do as much of that as possible.

OMG, the color timing on this is all wrong, and nothing like it was in the theater in 2021.

Agreed. There were [I]so[I] many callbacks to the iconography of the first film(s) I was surprised. Take away all the fancy bells and whistles and it seems to be the typical rebootquel formula. As always, I’ll be happy to be proved wrong!

Not sure if this makes any sense but it looks like an action movie with Matrix characters in it. Not necessarily a Matrix movie. Hope I'm wrong.

The new Morpheus seems dull, and it looks too polished lacking the grittiness of the first film..

Given your comments about Blade Runner 2049, I wouldn't trust your taste in films period. It surpassed the original by far.

Don't worry. It already looks stupid.

You are aware that Keanu had neck surgery during the first film and they saved the kicking scenes until the end of filming and/or used guns more precisely because Keanu couldn't do high kicks while his neck was healing. You're never as good as new so if he managed with the sequels and John Wick, I'd say he'll do just fine. If you want a karate movie, you'd be better off looking elsewhere.

BR2049 is great because it was made by Villeneuve, one of the most talented directors of this century so far. Instead of making a reboot with the sole purpose of cashing in on the original, his goal was to a create a sequel that respected the original while being original enough to stand on its own.

The only positive thing about Matrix 4 is that at least one of the Wachowski sisters is writing and directing. The bad news is that they haven’t made a truly great film since the original. It also looks like it’s just a reboot with better CGI instead of an original sequel/reboot like Fury Road. I really hope I’m wrong, but I’m keeping my expectations low.

I don't think very many people would agree with you. About half of people who watched both might agree that 2049 is better, since their user scores are neck and neck, but there likely aren't many who think it is far better.

He probably can't even move as he did in the first movie with the neck injury. Of course age matters when you're doing martial arts. It's the same with Jackie Chan in his later movies. A younger lead could do more than Reeves.

In fact, I didn't see anything in the trailer that made me think he still has the 1999 dojo scene physicality in him. The Matrix is a lot more than Keannu Reeves.

@Warm Gun - Ana de Armas alone was enough reason to like the sequel better.
