I bought a 2TB SN850 to go in mine but also bought a used 500Gb one as I was considering selling one of them. Both are the heatsink versions.
I installed the 500Gb one and it didn’t recognise it until I restarted my PS5, then it was formatted. Twice that day my PS5 crashed and ‘repaired’ the M.2 SSD. The second time it kept making a ‘farting’ noise while playing FIFA. After the second crash I figured it may be doing harm to my PS5 so I removed it and installed the other one. Was fine for a couple of days but then this one also crashed my PS5. Anyone else had this problem? The 500Gb one was also extremely hot when I removed it. I’m wondering if it was made hotter by having my PS5 in the horizontal position? Last edited by jgdc74; 09-19-2021 at 01:22 AM. |

I think they are taking the better safe than sorry approach though, wouldn't want to tell people it was fine to use one without a heatsink only to have it die from heat. This way Sony can cover their backs and can't take any blame if anything does go wrong. |

Hi guys
Not a big gamer here but I’ve been doing some reading trying to figure out the extra PS5 storage situation. COD owns my bloody PS5. I understand you have to move games back and forth regardless of you use internal extra storage or external USB. Is there and speed increase to moving games by using one or the other? How long does it generally take? Just trying to figure out the best play with the new battlefield around the corner. Thanks! |

Once you have an SSD installed you don't need to transfer games around since you can play PS5 games off of it just as if you were playing them off of the built in SSD. You only need to transfer PS5 games if you are using USB external storage, be it HDD or SSD. External storage can only hold the PS5 games and can't play them so you'd have to swap about the games you want to play and manage your space. Depending on what USB device you get transfer times aren't that long, you could be looking at around 6mins to transfer about 50GB if you go for USB SSD. If you have a lot of PS4 games, then the best solution is to keep them on an external storage device since they will play just as well from external as they would on the internal. Then prioritise your internal storage exclusively for PS5 games. If money is no object you can get a 4TB Gen 4 SSD. |

For those on the fence about getting an SSD or not.
I’d suggest waiting for the price to drop on a 2TB model unless you can already afford it. Been reading up on specs & basically the higher the capacity, the higher the performance (Better read/write) & longevity of the SSD you decide to get. |

My 2Tb has been ok since that blip, but the 500Gb one is going back for a refund.
I bought the 2Tb one direct from Western Digital for £386, which was the cheapest anyone was selling it for. It also has a higher read speed than the 500Gb. Both easily met the required specs though. And why did someone here say we weren’t supposed to use ones with heatsinks when all experts are saying you need a heatsink? |

At this point I look at it as a minor annoyance, if you are a cod player though I can see how its a big problem out the gate but if you play a game just for the single player then delete you will be ok for awhile, I just dont see why they couldnt put bigger ssds in it to begin with because considering the ssd out now for a 2tb cost more then the system itself its also not something everyone will be jumping right in to do.

Just 22c hotter than what the drive can withstand. You need a heatsink. It’s not a maybe I should get one hmm. They are designed to withstand 70c. So am surprised they peak at 92c The heatsink I got will apparently lower that to 62c. |

Either way, you must have a heatsink on your SSD when installed in the PS5. |

I'm hoping that if anything, a PS5 Pro if released is more about native 4K/60fps targets with better Ray Tracing and stable 120fps performance for titles which i'm willing to potentially pay the premium for once, i don't think i'll be upgrading past 4K anytime soon for gaming or movies unless the manufacturers all somehow switch to 8K which seems ludicrous given the lack of genuine 4K content even now. WD doesn’t use Phison for their Gen4’s. They use an in-house Memory Controller just like Samsung. Should be an interesting look non-the-less. Curious if DF modded the Memory Controller? |

I watched the video yesterday and i don't think so. Actually worked as well as the stock drive generally or better in some examples.

Honestly the gen 4 drive was probably over kill. I am not mad at Sony for future proofing the console with it, but I am not happy with them requiring it for upgrades right now when I doubt any of the games actually require it, especially when 99% can be ran on a PC with even the most basic SSD, and when the Xbox is just as capable of a console (if not more so in many regards) and it only uses gen 3 SSDs. It is what it is though, and the price on the 1TB 750SE is actually very decent. Will probably go with that for now until the 2TB drives come down in price.

I don't mind the SSD I get for my PS5 being overkill at this point. As was mentioned, it's future proofing coming in at a premium. But just because a cheaper, slower SSD works fine on games released already doesn't mean they can handle the ones the come out in 5+ years seamlessly.
I'm not the kind of person that constantly updates my tech, and I try not to spend hundreds of $ at a time on anything that can avoid it. But in this case I would be (unfortunately) spending almost the equivalent to the cost of a PS5 on an SSD for one because I don't want to think about it or upgrade it any time soon. And with Amazon gift cards saved up over the years, I'm actually looking at spending only $300 on a 2TB overkill drive with 3rd party heatsink that, if I feel like it, I can put in my laptop later. Still a lot of money but I'm looking at it like I won't need to spend that money again in a very long time. |

1 thing to note which you may or may not know is you only have 2 options after booting up your PS5. You can format it or you can power off console & take out the drive. So no pictures or videos can be stored. Just games & apps. You can still use your USB drive. The biggest pain in the arse for me wasn’t putting the double sided heatsink together or any installation for that matter. It was putting the console back on my TV shelf in horizontal position & doing cable management while fiddling with the cheap Sony stand. Ugh. They should have a Screw for that stand when placing the console horizontally. Anyway, got it all set up. Formatted & reads were 6,500GB/s Put the god awful Avengers game on it (97GB) & played a few hours so far. The Internal PS5 SSD is faster at 2 things with this crap game. 1 Loading in general is around 1 second faster on internal. 2 Previewing character cosmetics takes longer to load all asset details. PS5 hates Avengers too. Doesn’t matter where the game is stored. It draws the most power of any PS5 game I’ve played & the System does get warmer than other PS5 titles. Not a good test case here obviously but I’m basically stress testing the SN850 to see if it’ll crash the game. 3-4 hours, no crashes & my PS5 hasn’t melted yet. ![]() |
