Am gonna take a look at that video. Haven’t seen it yet. I just know WD doesn’t use Phison for their Memory Controllers which is clearly seen in DF’s thumbnail.

Just got done testing (SN850) with what I believe to be the highest demanding PS5 game that I’ve played before, that being Avengers. Power draw has to be around 225 watts. Played 6 hours of that. PS5 was oven ready when I closed app. No performance issues or crashes during gameplay. Turns out to be on-par with Sony’s Internal SSD with regards to loading. Though PS5 Internal is more consistent with load times compared to M.2.

So it is the WD? I haven’t seen the video I was going by WD site which says it’s a Gen 3 SSD with a max write speed of 3,600MB/s so that’s why I wondered if it’s the same one since the PS5 only supposed to recognise gen 4 devices with +5,000MB/s.

I've seen a screenshot of one of these SSD's storage capacity. It showed the capacity of a 2TB drive actually being a full 2TB of usable storage, and not like 1.7TB or so usable storage "2TB" hard drives used to have. Or PS5's internal 800GB drive actually having something like 670GB of actual usable space.

Is this true for all of these SSDs?

It is a “Modified” Gen3 250GB WD model.
It is advertised as Gen4 3,200GB/s

Its memory Controller is a Gen4 Phison.

That is the only reason PS5 accepts this drive.

As for DF’s Video...

I’ll never understand why they continue to show every area in Ratchet that isn’t taxing to the SSD’s READs. For those unaware, Level 5 BLIZAR PRIME is theeee spot where Ratchet has to load in nearly 17GB of Data in a few seconds. If you’re confused, it’s the level that when you first arrive, you have to hit a crystal which then changes the entire world in 2 seconds. It’s also Not-On-Rails.

Only M.2 but there is a catch.

Just like the Internal, the M.2 requires 2 separate files once formatted.
1 to run games.
2 to run system OS. (The “Other” tab)

More games means more space needed for OS or Other.

So if you stick a 1TB SSD in a PS5 you will see 1TB as the actual capacity. So the PS5s 825gb SSD is the full size the useable space is a lot less not because it uses binary bytes but because the OS has a lot of space reserved.

Unix and Linux based systems will recognise the 1TB SSD for example as 1TB because they use Decimal Bytes, where as Win OS for example uses Binary Bytes which means a kb is made up of 1,024bytes and a mb is made up of 1,024kb which is why if you look at the storage capacity on a PC for example it’s less than the advertised capacity on the box.

1 thing to note which you may or may not know is you only have 2 options after booting up your PS5. You can format it or you can power off console & take out the drive. So no pictures or videos can be stored. Just games & apps. You can still use your USB drive.

The biggest pain in the arse for me wasn’t putting the double sided heatsink together or any installation for that matter. It was putting the console back on my TV shelf in horizontal position & doing cable management while fiddling with the cheap Sony stand. Ugh. Formatted & reads were 6,500GB/s

Put the god awful Avengers game on it (97GB) & played a few hours so far.

2 Previewing character cosmetics takes longer to load all asset details.

PS5 hates Avengers too. Doesn’t matter where the game is stored. It draws the most power of any PS5 game I’ve played & the System does get warmer than other PS5 titles.

Not a good test case here obviously but I’m basically stress testing the SN850 to see if it’ll crash the game. 3-4 hours, no crashes & my PS5 hasn’t melted yet.

One thing I wish people making SSD expansion comparison videos would do is use games other than Cyberpunk and Ratchet and Clank to test them. R&C is clearly very well optimized and a bit too ideal to keep using and only using. Like you did, using Avengers and several other games that may not be as well made or optimized would be a more realistic test case for these SSDs loading assets. Give me the chonky nonsense of AC Valhalla in these tests!

I'd like to start with extra internal for now and later figure out an external drive for my PS4 games. I just had to uninstall Cyberpunk so that I could install Deathloop. So I want to do this now since I'm like a big game away again from having to uninstall stuff.

i think they R&C because of the fact that you can switch between two different worlds on the fly, like The Medium... whose developers said it couldn't be done on last gen consoles due to the slow load times on hard drives. The only different it will make in those other games is an extra 2-3 seconds from a cold boot up of the game.

Well Day 2 of using the SN850, I decided to transfer Kena Bridge of Spirits.

Played roughly 6-8 hours finishing up the collectables.

Kena is a good test. Being that this team never made a PS5 game let alone any other on any other platform before.

Anywhoo 6-8 hours of continuous play, the SN850 started to show performance issues with regards to FPS. It’s possible the new 1.05v patch added these performance hits but I’m betting my money that it’s the SN850 being the culprit here.

Maybe because of spoilers they do not show the most taxing SSD stress test in Ratchet. Everything they have shown in Ratchet can work below 5.5GBs.

Honestly, i'd think it's possibly something else. The SSD shouldn't be causing an issue given in the tests it usually doesn't either. As you said, it's got a new patch. That could be more of a culprit.

Tbh, i feel like with things as they stand, i might not be able to get a good price on the 2TB upgrade i want for the NVMe for a few years. If the 2023ish rumours of a PS5 Pro pan out, i might grab both at the same time. I'm unfortunately a sucker for better performance at 4K right now even with the PS5 i have.

I just installed the 2TB WD Black SN850 (with this heatsink: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and everything is working so far. I just filled up my internal storage completely with my current PS5 library and my old backlog of PS4 stuff and am putting a few things on the m.2 drive now to test it out. Seems to be downloading/installing even faster onto the new drive.
