Question

This would be why amazon.co.uk is going out of business, they don't make enough money off their sales...

The main reasons for Amazon UK being so much cheaper:
  • Studio discounting of older titles is more widespread in the UK.
  • Many "UK" e-tailers (who actually ship from the Channel Islands, Switzerland, or even Hong Kong) try to get their box set prices below £18 to avoid VAT (value-added tax) when it enters the UK.
  • Amazon UK refunds VAT on all orders shipped outside the EU; most other "UK" e-tailers can't do that because of their VAT-avoidance scheme. (Amazon ships UK orders from Jersey via Indigostarfish; their VAT savings on UK orders pays for free shipping. Non-UK orders ship from the UK; VAT is adjusted to local rates on EU orders and refunded on non-EU orders. Many of their competitors ship ALL orders from outside the UK, so they have no VAT to refund.)
  • Their shipping rates to North America are less than many of their competitors--including Amazon's own French & German sites.

Default Released earlier in the UK

Another plus is that many titles are released in the UK before they ever make it to the U.S.

I bought the UK unedited version of Pirate Radio titled The Boat That Rocked, 3 months prior to the U.S. release. It was only about $27 including air shipping.

I pre-ordered the new Nanny McPhee sequel for $22 which will be released in the UK in July. This film will not even play in US cinemas until August!

And still a lot cheaper on many things.

Is business overhead that much lower overseas? Or is markup just that much higher over here, because they think US consumers can/will pay it?

Its a back and forth issue caring by product. thats why i check both sites before ordering. the only advantage of Amazon US for me is Amazon prime...But if Amazon UK had a program like prime for customers outside the Uk I'd buy into that myself too

In large general terms it seems to be the big boxsets that are cheaper there and singles are cheaper here -- neither side has come up with a real strong explanation for either phenomenon though part of it is explained by VAT
That's a good point. I've imported a couple dozen single disc BDs from the UK though. While it's not always cheaper to import after shipping is factored in, which is why I usually only buy stuff that isn't available over here - for those who actually live in the UK, the prices I've seen seem to average at least 5.00 cheaper over there. I was importing $6-8 blu-rays from the uk long before they started so routinely breaking the $10 price barrier in the states. I've more of less stopped that though, now. Seems like everything I imported either came out stateside within a year as well, or I just didn't like enough to want to keep.

You got a good deal there, but it works the other way as well. We do not get your gold box deals and your BOGOF. We do have B2G1 on older films though.

Count your blessings and I hope you enjoy the films.
