Like 3D, Cinerama was one of the gimmicky formats of the 1950s that Hollywood turned to in a desperate effort to keep people coming back to cinemas once TV started taking over the entertainment industry. It's a shame only two narrative movies were made in true Cinerama before Hollywood abandoned it - it was after all a fairly expensive and cumbersome process, and audiences were more than happy to settle for plain Cinemascope and anamorphic formats in general.
Good riddance. The Cinerama competition was stupid. I thought Ben-hur had a hard case of eagle vision, but this here is unreal. Even if you watch it on an adequately sized, curved screen, your off-center vision has to be taken up by a whole bunch of nothing. Why not go really far to the top and bottom too then? Oh yeah, because it would look super weird and make the subjects appear too small. Which this still probably does in a Cinerama theater.

Anyway, haven't watched the movie yet, but skimming through made me go "WTF."

It does not, actually. Like I said earlier, it looks gorgeous and is super immersive. The stuff at the far end of the left and right panels is practically facing each other directly.

Maybe if I ask nicely later, my brother will try to play it on his Oculus Rift. I don't like asking him for stuff, though. Don't know if he has even tried movies.

Yeah, they never saw it or the other large wide formats in a proper theater, so I just chuckle and move on.

Why, crop the damned thing to fit a modern television screen of course!

You don't need someone else to crop it, most TVs these days have a zoom feature so the image fills the whole screen.

But if the studio crops it, the viewers get a higher resolution picture than if they zoomed in themselves. As long as it was scanned in higher than 2K for Blu-ray or higher than 4K for UHD. The studio can also pan and scan what's most important. Not that I'm advocating for it. Cropping is shit.

I agree 100% with Mr. Gun. I also hate puppies, ice cream, and ocean breezes. Damn them all!
