My copy came with all 3 discs stuck in place, but the DVD is cracked and has numerous scuffs on the underside, along with some small flakes of the label being gone. The label is also worn away in a circle... It's like it was some disc from a yard sale thrown in it... Ordered from Amazon... I can't image this fill be fun to fix.

I'll watch the 4K, then the theatrical Blu-Ray, and then the TV Version. But my Daughter is making me watch The Nightmare on Elm Streets first. But I'm gonna deep dive on them for sure. The filmy circles on the cases inside rub off, and there are zero scratches for all 3 discs, and my XBOX plays everything I have ever tossed in it. So suck it to people that say it doesn't LOL bunch of idiots. I don't see myself pausing it through the hot tub scene but if I notice the fps drop/compression I'll say something haha.

Sh^ty man, that's why I wait till the next or after batch comes out before buying, Like the PS5 for example, the first or 2nd batches usually still have some sort of defects usually. Seems to be a regular pattern with Scream Factory.

Can you explain to me (in terms that are like I'm a moderately knowledgeable 12 year-old, ha ha) how a glitch like this can appear in the HDR10 version but not in Dolby Vision?

I mostly get how HDR works in general (and the differences between HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision) but what I don't get is how a glitch like that is in one and not the other. I turned off DV to see what it looked like in HDR10, and that looks like a genuine encoding error in the transfer - it can't be that DolbyVision is somehow covering it up?

Thanks!
The Dobly is indeed covering it up, thanks to what's called a Full Enhancement Layer (FEL for short). When they do these discs they start with the DV master and they use the metadata to generate the HDR10 grading. They take this HDR10 version and compress it for disc like normal. Then they compare the compressed HDR10 to the original DV master to create a set of difference data which is added to the disc, and it's this difference data that is the key: if the HDR10 has poor compression, if it has crushed blacks or clipped highlights, if it has the wrong grading, if it has banding, if it has outright encoding errors like "pixel tits", if any of these things do not match the DV master then the difference data is able to correct it (within reason).

But this only applies to discs with the FEL system, as some other studios use what's called Minimum Enhancement Layer (MEL) which only contains dynamic metadata on top of the HDR10, it has none of the difference data that 'rebuilds' the image. Compression guru David Mackenzie prefers MEL.

If you skip to the end of my Total Recall write up you can see images of this correction in action, turning a shockingly poor HDR10 encode into a rather passable one. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...g#post18410554

You do realize that in the grand scheme of things, none of this really matters and just comes off as from someone who likes to hear themselves talk.

Yep!

(And I'm glad I quoted you that time, loads of your posts mysteriously vanished just after you returned. Not a bad thing that they disappeared, it just makes us looks like we're replying to no-one. But hey, in the grand scheme of things none of this really matters.)

I have interest in 4k, as long as the 4K is a better presentation. A BD can look almost as good as a 4K if it is from the same scan. If the 4K has a very bad flaw to it that is not carried over to that BD, I do not see how it might not be a superior presentation depending on the devices it is played on.

Source detectives, what can be gleaned from two different scans showing these same, two marks?

They're not on the UHD; if they were, they were probably cleaned.

I was curious whether this could mean the 2018 Steelbook--thought to be from an IP--might actually have been from the OCN (also believed to be the source for Universal's 30th Anniversary release). Could help to explain some of the textural similarities I was seeing between the new HII UHD/Blu and the '18 Steel...

White dirt is what's on the negative. As it's on the negative it gets printed into subsequent elements, so two different transfers from two different elements sharing the same dirt isn't quite the smoking gun that it appears to be. And that blue-coloured blip is damage to the top blue-sensitive layer of the emulsion in the negative itself.

Blu-Ray first.

OK well, I got my cigarettes and my Keurig coffee. Sat down and put in the Blu-Ray Theatrical first. Oh, I was the fan that only ever watched the DVDs when they have first released individually2000-1 and the full DVD boxset a decade later. I borrowed it from a friend. Which was around 2011-2012 so 10 years ago since I binge-watched the whole catalog. I've never looked into Extras. One nice thing about this Scream release is all the extra content I have never watched. Even the 7 minutes of Posters & Lobby Cards from different regions around the globe I found fascinating. The ancient-looking TV Promos, the TV Spots, The Teaser Trailer/and the Original Theatrical Trailer were all fascinating.

The first thing I did was check the Alternate Ending which I have never seen. Then with the Directors input which was a nice touch too. I'll have to watch all the Deleted Scenes later 8+Minutes there and a Directors Commentary option as well. I did notice with the Alternate Ending 1080i footage there is a stutter/and audio drop out/freeze in between where Laurie tells Jimmie "We made it...we made it" Anyway I watched the deleted scenes there's one I really like with Laurie on the hospital bed talking with Jimmy that's extended. That I felt added to the film. Hmm, I think there is a better-edited cut buried in here with more intense dialog scenes that were cut but ya who cares LOL. It's CLASSIC the way it is anyway.

I didn't notice a problem with the Hot Tub scene on the Standard Blu-Ray. So let's hop over to the 4K and take a look.

These Audio options and Stereo are very clear now. This sounds so much better in terms of clarity and balance than Halloween 1 and its low quality (NO BASS IMHO NOW) downmixed Mono's and Chase 5.1/7.1+ added cornball foley effects. If you don't have a TV that can reproduce a high level and most of the WCG, lacks Local Dimming, is weak on HDR/DV Nits reproduction and lacks a bright screen and Dolby Vision you will probably be just as happy with the Blu-Ray until you get something higher-end and out of the budget/mid-range of UHDTV's. These Hospital scenes get quite DARK in some areas before and after the big chase scene finale with Loomis, Laurie, and Michael. I think it's even more intense than the original final chase scene but who cares. Everyone has an opinion, but this version puts people back into a high film quality release and maybe recreates that theater-like experience. Works for me! IMHO you shouldn't just prefer the first one because it's really half the story without the EPIC Finale! So I recommend owning this 4K along with the 4K Lionsgate or the 4K Scream. And deep diving into all the extra's on the Lionsgate and Scream releases for the full Halloween experience. The video bitrate is like 75-100 MBPS too on average maybe the lowest is 60's from what I checked. There is a hot tub glitch in HDR right when she removes her towel. 100% but you might not notice it until perhaps the 2nd or more watch or if you blink you would miss it for sure. I can live with it but it's too bad the quality control wasn't there. Just blink right as she is removing her towel LOL and enjoy the rest of the show. Or get a Dolby Vision set+player.

Watched this last night and did not experience any issues with my disc. It played flawlessly. I even went back and quadruple checked and it was flawless every time. This is the first time I've owned Halloween II on any format and I was impressed with the image. It looked great to me.
