51" from about 12' back. I'm pretty used to it, though. Growing up we had around a 50-something" crt tv and seating was something like 20' feet away. Moving it up a flight of stairs with 2 people using a dolly took a whole lot of work.

49" TV @ 4ft - I'm nearsighted and don't like to wear glasses while watching. This is a good size but I'll probably upgrade to a bigger TV as manufacturer's seem to only put high-end features in 55" or larger.

I bought a 75 inch about a month and a half ago and my eyeballs to the screen are about 6’ 3” to 6’ 5”.

48 inches is currently the smallest you can go while still being able to get a high-end set (LG C1 or Sony A9S), at least until LG and Samsung release high-end 42-inch and 43-inch versions of their flagships maybe next year.

How closely should this really be followed? I have a "tv room" at my new house (not a home theater or anything fancy) and I wanted to put a 77" OLED in it, but according to the chart, a 65" is the max I should go.

What "problems" could I have going one foot bigger than the recommended size?

If you can afford to go bigger, I say go for it. I think the chart was written with 1080p screens in mind because it says 9 feet for a 65-inch screen but that seems ridiculously far for me, since you have to sit closer to perceive a difference between 4K and 1080. I sit like 4.5 feet from my 65-inch TV.

I can't think of any drawbacks of having a bigger screen as long as it can fit in the space you have and the increased immersion you'll get is definitely worth it. I think this chart is more accurate since it draws a distinction between the different resolutions and fits my experience more.

One thing I noticed about it myself is I can see more compression artifacts. I’ve never really been too picky about compression but the jump from 65 to 75 at my viewing distance really points out the ugly artifacts. On the flip side, the good stuff looks even better and is much more immersive.

I think I'm going to stick with my 65" for my "TV room" where my viewing distance is only about 8'.

However, I'm upgrading to 77" for my living room where my viewing distance is about 14'.

When I was using my 65in plasma, I sat short of 9ft away...

Currently, I have a 77in and I now sit a few inches closer.... lol
