No idea, I assumed it was standard 4-perf 35mm.

Yep, reviews are quite confusing between Trade Paperback and the Mass Market Paperback editions!

I think this experiment is really interesting. The film looked incredible in ultra laser, it had the same sort of sharpness of digital but it emulated the grace of film, so to speak, as well. Just like Fraser said, it's not just about the grain.

I hope he would've told us more about it though. IIRC it was 35mm, but he didnt mention which perf. I also wish he told us why they didn't op to shoot the whole picture in full frame (costs aside). Also why not go with scanning in 65mm? Or IMAX film while you're at it? Full frame LF is also 1.43 if I'm not mistaken... (just like full frame 35mm is able to, right?)

Sadly the only IMAX I have is 1.90 so viewing the film at home will show more of the full frame (since 1.78 is taller than 1.90) and besides that I dont like IMAX sound.

In the end I think Fraser has outdone himself. It looks incredibly stunning and I really hope he returns for Part II. I can't see anybody else continue it (but I'd love to see Deakins light Messiah, may we get there)

“For all the desert sequences they shot IMAX”? Hmmm. Lazy bit of journalism there. There were no IMAX cameras harmed during the making of Dune.

Also if I remember correctly, the very first shot of spice rolling over the sand is not IMAX lol.

If they get a chance to do Dune Part 2, they should really consider presenting the next movie entirely in 1.43 for IMAX, since Villeneuve did say he once imagined the entire film in 4:3. I saw Zack Snyder's Justice League on a 1.43 IMAX screen and it was incredibly epic, and that's a film that was originally framed for 16:9.

I saw Snyders cut at home but even there the aspect ratio was actually quite pleasing.

I hope they get to shoot Part II of Dune. I thought Fraser said all the on location stuff was in full frame but I guess for some framing they went with 2.39. Either way, I think especially for the spectacular action sequences that are just waiting to be shot in Part II would benefit greatly from full frame
[Show spoiler]I mean, the attack on Arrakeen with the Sandworms...
but I think scenes in the Sietches would be amazing in such a taller frame too.

I think the movie industry has to switch to HFR. They are stuck in 24 fps for way too long. Got nothing against 24 fps but time to embrace HFR. I still love film and grain probably being me being a bit old but I do like to try to get my hands dirty with new techs. HFR worked well with Billy Lynn and Gemini Man.

Back to Dune, hoping it performs well. The director is way too underrated and underappreciated IMO.

I did like Gemini Mans look as a nice change but I could never watch every film like that. HFR would probably work best for tv shows as and such. I like the good old 24 no matter what reason it was decided as a standard for.

Now this I could get behind.

4:3 is also great for claustrophobic films. Somehow reminds me of how they made the corridors increasingly smaller in Alien as the film progressed. Very different but kinda same u know...

The movie industry will be switching to HFR and HDR in cinemas, once the transition to digital cinema displays (microLED) has been completed. Those advancements will be the cornerstones of the digital cinema spec for that tech and it's on the roadmap, but that won't happen until the 2030's. All the projector makers (Sony, Christie, Barco, etc.) have terminated their projector R&D/manufacturing - no new models/products are planned beyond minor system upgrades to whatever 4K digital cinema systems are now in place - and are shifting all their resources into making that transition happen smoothly.

Jesus, the cost for a proper IMAX-sized direct view cinema display would be astronomical.

Zack had always envisioned it in that aspect ratio though. He explained that 1.66 was a compromise with the studio for regular screens, and then his 1.37 AR version for IMAX.

That's coming, but it is a long way off. Projectors will be the IMAX norm until microLED is mature and manufacturing isn't difficult. In my area, the cinemas have already begun installing first-gen microLED screens and the quality is beyond reproach, once you see the clarity, brightness, and HDR factor in play.
